First built in the 16th century, this beautiful fortress is now a luxury boutique that feels like a small village. It features two restaurants serving regional cuisine; an indoor pool; a spa complete with a small fitness center; a large bar and lounge; a couple of shops, and six art galleries. Its 126 rooms are all stylish and up-to-date, with contemporary white and grey decor, LCD TVs, and free Wi-Fi; most have marina views and/or a balcony. The only downside is probably that the hotel does not offer on-site parking, and off-site lots can be pricey.
Scene
A contemporary boutique housed in a beautifully renovated 16th-century fortress with ocean views
This 16th-century fortress retains most of its historic architectural features, including the moat (now a garden); the main square; the walls surrounding the citadel, and even some of the watch towers. The arched doors in the old stone walls open onto the large, cobblestone courtyard where the army once gathered. While the original structures still look the same on the outside, the property’s interiors are decidedly modern. The lobby is an airy space with colorful minimalist decor and contemporary art hanging on the walls. This old-meets-new vibe extends to most of the other common areas, including the Taberna da Praça, the lovely ground-floor restaurant that is spread out in several long rooms with arched ceilings.
Location
Central location adjacent to the marina
The Pousada has a central location in Cascais, directly adjacent to the marina. A few attractions can be reached on foot, including the Condes de Castro Guimaraes Museum, the pedestrian area -- lined with local shops and cafes -- and the Merechal Carmona Park. There are a couple of small beaches within walking distance. Central Lisbon and the airport are a 30-minute drive away. The hotel can arrange transportation to the airport for a fee.
Rooms
Stylish and contemporary; some have unique designs by local artists
The property’s 126 rooms are all large and stylish, with contemporary white and grey decor, wood floors, and a couple of pops of color. Some rooms have unique designs by local artists, and many have balconies. While the majority have good views -- some of the ocean and the marina, some of the grounds -- a couple have limited views, so guests may want to check with front desk. Bathrooms are spacious and clean, with Castelbel toiletries, and either a walk-in shower with rain showerhead, or a tub. In-room amenities include LCD TVs, stocked minibars, and free Wi-Fi -- but no coffee or tea facilities.
Features
A spa, an indoor pool, two restaurants, and six art galleries on-site
The hotel has a long list of great amenities, including two Mediterranean restaurants with stylish, contemporary decor and outdoor seating; an indoor pool with a sun deck; a small business center; a large lobby bar; and free Wi-Fi throughout. The spa is a relaxing space complete with a dry sauna, treatment rooms, and a tiny but well-equipped fitness center with marina views. The Pousada’s "Art District," however, is probably the most unique feature here. It is comprised of six art galleries showcasing works by local artists, and guests can chat with them while they work, or even buy the paintings exhibited. Some of their works can be found in the hotel’s rooms. Note that there is no on-site parking.
