No major amenities beside restaurant
Many of the 30 rooms here are carved
directly into the surrounding rock, making for delightful features like curved
walls and indentations that have been turned into functional sections. The
hotel, set about a 10-minute walk up a cobblestone street from the center of
town, is fantastically terraced into the hillside, with stone patios facing
multiple directions. Of note is the on-site restaurant, which is
described by many visitors as excellent. Besides this and the attractive
grounds, there are pretty much no additional major amenities.
Scene
Terraced into the hillside; both homey and elegant
The property is set directly into the
hillside, abutting some of the rock formations that make the area famous. The
Sultan has a few levels and is constructed of several different forms of the
pale regional rock; at nearly every turn there’s a terrace, many adorned with
Persian rugs and places to sit along with spectacular sights of the surrounding
countryside. The lobby has large windows, a huge Persian rug, an ornate glass
chandelier hung from the carved wood ceiling, and a plethora of easy chairs to
take in the views.
Location
About 10 minutes from the center of Goreme on foot
The hotel is a bit outside of the town of
Goreme, about a 10-minute walk from the center and its shops, bars, and
eateries, including Dibek Restoran and Manzara. Nearby cultural attractions
include the Zelve and Goreme open-air museums, and the bus station is about 12
minutes away by foot. The property sits uphill, which may pose a problem for
those dragging baggage, but pickup can be arranged with advance notice. The
nearest airport, in Nevsehir, is about an hour’s drive northwest. The hotel can
arrange transfers for a fee.
Rooms
Many spaces carved directly into rock, with distinctive accents
Many of
the rooms here are carved directly into the stone of the surrounding hillside,
meaning undulating walls and indentations with decorative carving are the norm.
Doors and furnishings are made of substantial wood, and some rooms skylights
cut directly into the rock. With arched doorways an additional highlight, most units have a significant amount of sconce
lighting, though spaces can still be a bit on the dark side. All rooms have minibars
(no alcohol), hairdryers, small flat-screen TVs, and walk-in stall showers in earth-tone bathrooms.
Features
Restaurant with Turkish cuisine and plethora of patios
The
hotel houses Seten Anatolian Restaurant, which focuses on Traditional Turkish cuisine. While a few guests have commented
that these dishes may be slightly modified to please the western European
palate, the food generally gets high marks from visitors. Though amenities at the Sultan are otherwise limited,
the grounds themselves are a huge asset. Terraces face multiple directions and
are set with benches and rugs, making for a romantic, arresting visual
experience of traditional architecture and nature. The property also has its
own wine cellar as well as a collection of historical artifacts on display. A computer is available for guest use and free Wi-Fi is offered at the restaurant and terrace areas. Free parking is available as well.
