Some complaints about food quality and service
The 453-room Suhan Cappadocia Hotel is located in the town of Avanos, and unlike others in Cappadocia, is not a cave hotel. Instead visitors will find amenities such as two pools, a spa, and a full-service restaurant. It is one of the largest hotels in the area, with simple, pleasant rooms with small bathrooms; suites have indoor sitting areas and private outdoor balconies. The exterior grounds show regional influence and the lobby is considerably more polished than the bordering-on-bland rooms. Travelers looking for a true local experience may want to check out the area's cave hotels; otherwise, this is a decent value option.
Scene
Big hotel on nice grounds
Standing out in the distance of the old city of Avanos is the Suhan Cappadocia Hotel. It has a grand exterior with an arched stone gateway and well groomed grounds. On the inside, the hotel is modern with few traditional influences. The lobby is an open space with high ceilings, a dangling chandelier, beautifully arched windows, and large columns. There are comfortable armchairs to one side of the lobby, and a spiral staircase to another, leading to the second floor casual lounge area. The atmosphere is quite busy in this large property that often accommodates big tour groups.
Location
In a pottery-centric town with a number of local handcraft shops
The town of Avanos is well known for its clay pottery, and gave the Red River its name. Local folklore says that because locals have been taking clay by the water since the Hittite period, the river has turned red from the clay. Visitors are in luck, because the bank of the Red River is accessible through the property’s back grounds. Also nearby are the hot air balloon tours, which must be pre-arranged with guides. The next neighboring site of Zelve is approximately 10 minutes away by car. The ruins of Zelve have the largest concentration of "fairy chimneys" and attract many tourists. Approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Suhan Cappadocia Hotel is the underground city of Ozkonak, with levels of complex tunnels carved from volcanic rock. The two closest airports are Nevsehir, 35 kilometers away, and Antalya, 80 kilometers away.
Rooms
No-frills, pleasant rooms with patterned carpeting, work stations, and clean bathrooms
The rooms are medium in size and are decorated in rich colors from the bedspreads to the carpets to the curtains. Some rooms have a golden-yellow color scheme, while others have a turquoise-blue color scheme. There are electric kettles, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges in all rooms. Bathrooms are functional but small; the showers, basins, and toilets are very close to one another. In the suites, there are several couches and daybeds in the separate living areas. Outside each of the suite’s master bedroom is a private balcony with yet another sitting area.
Features
Indoor and outdoor swimming pools, spa, and restaurant
The Suhan Cappadocia Hotel has an indoor pool and an outdoor pool plus a traditional Turkish Hammam and sauna that offers massages and body treatments. There is a large restaurant that serves traditional Anatolian cuisine as well as international dishes. Unlike restaurants in other local hotels, this one serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The hotel has a car rental service, but visitors can easily drive in if they want, and there is free on-site parking. For anyone traveling from outside the area, the hotel can also provide a shuttle to Nevsehir Airport.
