The four-pearl Derwent House Boutique
Hotel is a small, intimate property that in some ways feels more like a luxury
home than a hotel. There are nine rooms in total, plus one family suite and an
apartment with self-catering facilities. All come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen
TVs, modern but cozy furnishings, and bathrooms with shower/tub combos. There's
no on-site restaurant, but a free breakfast is served every morning and
includes plenty of cereals and fresh fruit. Parking, while free, is limited to
three spots.
Scene
Homey atmosphere with more privacy than a typical B&B
Derwent House Boutique Hotel is a converted
villa on an upscale residential street with lots of trees and views of Table
Mountain in the distance. The lobby area feels more like a living room and what
one might find at a bed-and-breakfast, with wooden floors, gay walls, and
dark-wood furniture, with the occasional sea-foam green settee or paisley blue-and-green accent pillow. Walls are decorated with design pieces and
contemporary oil portraiture that beautifully evokes regional communities.
There's also an outdoor patio with a table and seating arrangement, plus a swing
chair. The property is a suitable option for tourists looking for at-home aesthetics with a
bit more privacy than a B&B.
Location
In a safe, quiet residential area near Table Mountain
Located in the neighborhood of Tamboerskloof, the Derwent is located in a quiet, safe residential area with nearby
Kloof Street offering a selection of bars and restaurants. It’s a six-minute
drive to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and a 10-minute drive to the
waterfront. Two Oceans Aquarium, to the northeast, takes 10 minutes to reach by road, while getting to the Heart of Cape Town Museum, to the east, takes around 15
minutes. Cape Town International Airport is a 20-minute drive east.
Rooms
Modern but homey rooms with gray interiors, plus a couple of units with self-catering
There
are two types of guest units at the Derwent: Beautiful Rooms and Fabulous
Rooms. Interiors are similar in both, although Fabulous Rooms are smaller and
don't have the best views. The hotel also provides a family suite with a kitchen and sofa bed, as well as an open-plan, self-catering apartment located in an
adjacent building. All rooms come with iPod docks, hairdryers, safes,
flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning along with mobile phones for guest use.
Wi-Fi is free. Decor is familial but masculine, with
gray accent walls, carpets, and throws along with solid wood furniture. Modern bathrooms have cream tile interiors, big white vessel sinks,
and shower/tub combos. Many also have windows.
Features
Solar-heated pool and continental breakfast buffet, but no full restaurant
One of
the prettiest features at the Derwent is its wooden and concrete patio with a
solar-heated pool and small whirlpool hot tub. Guests who don't want to take a dip have the option of stretching out on lounge chairs under the sun or sitting
poolside under the shade of a large palm tree. A free continental
breakfast is offered in what was once likely the villa's dining room and
includes cereals, breads, and plenty of fresh fruit. On-site parking,
while free, is limited to three spots.
