Bottom Line

A fairly typical budget beach motel, the Victorian features a nice outdoor pool with a nine-foot deep-end, barbecue grills, sundeck area, and little else. The 38-room property has a great downtown location next to Washington Street Mall -- a popular pedestrian strip with shops and restaurants -- and is only a block from the beach. The rooms are generic, but well maintained. During peak season, the Victorian Motel is a great value for Cape May.

Scene

Centrally located in historic downtown Cape May

Built in 1970, this three-story hotel is locally owned and stays open year-round. With the beach, restaurants, and shops within easy walking distance, there’s little need to move the car from its free parking space (one per unit). The Victorian is both couples friendly and family-friendly, and the pool has a shallow section for toddlers. For those who want to save money by cooking in their kitchenette or grilling poolside, a Megamax Grocery Store is less than half a mile away. The hotel isn’t pet-friendly, although the employees had a pet cat and dog in the lobby on the day of our visit. For those craving a beachfront location with an ocean view, Avondale by the Sea (four blocks east) is a good option.

Location

Directly beside the Washington Street Mall

Located about a block from the beach in historic downtown Cape May, the Victorian Motel sits directly beside the city’s most famous hotel (200-year-old Congress Hall) and Washington Street Mall -- the main shopping and dining strip. This bustling neighborhood is an architectural mix of low-rise hotels and old Victorian buildings. Just about anything you can think to do is easily accessible by foot. For theater lovers, the Cape May Stage is a couple blocks away, and Congress Hall offers a farm-to-table restaurant.

Rooms

Generic decor and views of the Washington Street Mall

The Victorian offers Deluxe Motel Rooms with two double beds or one king bed, but they are rare. The majority of units are one- or two-bedroom Efficiency Suites that feature kitchenettes with stovetops, microwaves, and coffeemakers. All rooms come with a flat-screen TV and mini-fridge. Rooms are non-smoking, although guests can smoke on the sundeck (just no cigars). Design-wise, these are typical motel rooms -- off-white walls, plain wooden furniture, and patterned bedspreads -- but they are clean and well maintained. Shared balconies/exterior hallways overlook the pool and Washington Street Mall.

Features

Clean swimming pool, shuffleboard, barbecue grills, and sundeck

The Victorian Motel doesn’t offer many amenities, but the essentials are there: a clean and spacious pool, free parking, and free Wi-Fi. The property also has barbecue grills, a shuffleboard court, and a sundeck with picnic tables. Bring your own beach towels and chairs if you plan on going to the beach. A bike rack is available, but bring your own lock (no bikes are permitted in the rooms or walkways).
