A one-of-kind bed and breakfast in Cape May that’s perfect for a romantic getaway by the beach
In an area of town known for its bed and breakfasts, The Mission Inn stands out for its design and architecture. In the early 20th century, while others in Cape May were still building in the Victorian style, businessman Nelson Z. Graves wanted to emulate the architecture he had seen on a recent business trip to the Pacific Coast.
The current innkeepers decided to use the somewhat out-of-place architecture to their advantage, and overhauled the entire property, focusing specifically on the 21 historic Spanish missions in California, which they visited and photographed for inspiration. The inn, which has a garden patio and outdoor seating, showcases a distinct style of artwork and murals, tile and woodwork, exposed brick, and vaulted ceilings with exposed wooden beams.
An incredible amount of detail and thought went into both the living room-style public area of the hotel and the individual rooms. The highlight of the Mission Inn is its walls. Nearly every square inch has been meticulously hand-painted, reflecting the flora and architecture of the different missions.

The Mission Inn is an easy walk to the beach (about a block), but is about a 20-minute walk to Washington Street Mall, the main shopping and dining strip. It’s a convenient location for those who want a quiet retreat that’s close to the beach. The upscale Pier House restaurant that serves Mediterranean cuisine is about two blocks away on the beach. The Cape May Lighthouse is about a 10-minute drive away.

The eight rooms at The Mission Inn have especially modern amenities for a bed and breakfast. Each room is inspired by a specific California mission, and the flora and architecture of each mission is painted on the walls and ceilings. Even the headboards have been ornately carved to emulate the front of each mission. Most rooms have large, two-person whirlpool tubs, heated tile floors in the bathrooms, electric fireplaces, showers with multiple massaging shower heads, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, iPod docking stations, and DVD players.
