Bottom Line

This budget motel offers guests a comfortable stay and a mid-size pool with a deep end and a hot tub. All 42 rooms and suites are spacious and have air-conditioning, large beds, and free Wi-Fi. Some have kitchenettes with a mini-fridge, microwave, coffee machine, and dishes, while other rooms have full kitchens with ovens and washer/dryers. Though dated and with some flaws, including odors and stains in a few rooms, guests generally appreciate the value for their money and the option of pet-friendly rooms. The nearest beach is a 10-minute walk away, so those looking to be a bit closer to the water should check out Sea Crest Inn, located across the street from the beach.

Scene

A generally well-kept, pet-friendly motel with a quiet atmosphere -- barking aside

This simple motel appeals to families and couples for its comfortable rooms at a value rate. In typical motel fashion, the two-story, L-shaped building has rooms facing the parking lot, with doors opening directly outside. The rooms are individually owned and therefore may vary in some design features and quality, but they operate as a single motel. At the time of our visit, a few touch ups were needed in the yard and with paint, but the overall look was clean and in good repair. With rooms designed specifically to accommodate pets, there are often cats and dogs staying at the hotel. This means guests with allergies could have a problem, and that barking dogs may be a nuisance. Otherwise, the hotel is generally quiet as guests tend to spend their days exploring the cape.

Location

10 minutes on foot from the beach, plus trolley stop out front for local trips

Madison Avenue Beach Club Motel is in a quiet residential area of Cape May, a 10-minute walk from the beach. The water tower across the street makes it easy to find. Nearby Cape May Tennis Club is a five-minute walk away. For guests with children, it is a six-minute walk to Lafayette Street Park, where there’s a playground and open space. It is a 12-minute walk to the Cape May Welcome Center, where several local bus lines make stops. The popular, open-air Washington Street Mall, with its restaurants, loads of shopping, and art galleries, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel, or a five-minute drive. A trolley stops in front of the hotel and makes stops all around town for easy access to popular sites and the beach. The Atlantic City International Airport is about a 50-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Spacious rooms with DVD players and free Wi-Fi, though dated and sometimes worn

A good variety of spacious room choices are available, accommodating from two to four people. The decor is simple and sometimes dated, with economy carpets and cabinetry, large floral prints in loud colors on most bedspreads and curtains, and a smattering of wicker furniture. Pet-friendly rooms are tiled instead of carpeted. Guests generally find rooms to be clean, but some complain of a musty smell and old stains on carpets. All rooms have air-conditioning, flat-screen TV with a DVD player, and free Wi-Fi. Kitchenettes have, at minimum, a coffeemaker with free coffees, a microwave, toaster, and a mini-fridge. Bathrooms are also roomy and clean, outfitted with a basic design and walk-in shower. Free toiletries include bar soap, shampoo, and lotion, plus a hairdryer is mounted on the wall. Towels tend to be threadbare, and guests find that when the hotel is full up, there aren’t enough for rooms with more than two people. Upgraded rooms can sleep up to four people with an extra queen-size bed, sofa beds, or king-size beds. Other room options include separate living/dining spaces, full kitchens, an in-unit washer/dryer, and two bed/two bath units with a whirlpool tub. Kitchen extras may include full-size refrigerators, an oven with a stovetop, and a dishwasher.

Features

A pool with a hot tub, a picnic area with a grill, and free parking

A mid-sized rectangular pool is next to the parking lot, surrounded by brick paving and a few plastic lounge chairs. It goes down to a depth of eight feet on one end with a waterfall flowing into the water. A large hot tub sits above the pool on the shallow end. The grassy strip by the street has a few wrought-iron tables with chairs and a grill for an alternative to cooking in the room. Laundry facilities are available on-site, for a fee. Parking is free for guests. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
