Bottom Line

Avondale by the Sea is a beachfront property popular with families and couples who flock to Cape May every summer for a beach vacation. The hotel has an almost unbeatable location directly across the street from the ocean and a six-minute walk to pedestrian-friendly Washington Street Mall. Rooms are clean but basic, with some dated touches (patterned bedspreads) and some nice amenities (flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi). Free breakfast and a reserved parking space are nice extras. There's a big outdoor pool but no fitness center. If kitchen facilities are a deciding factor, look into nearby Capri Motor Lodge.

Scene

Family friendly beach hotel

Right across the street from a wide strip of beach and the Atlantic Ocean, Avondale by the Sea is a clean and comfortable place to sleep between trips to the beach. The look of the hotel is a bit dated and skews towards old-fashioned details like white rocking chairs and lace doilies, but the overall effect is welcoming (and many guests note, particularly clean). The lobby is a functional space with maroon carpet, dried floral arrangements, and floral wallpaper. This is a family friendly hotel that does not have the party vibe of some other Jersey Shore properties.

Location

Across the street from the Atlantic Ocean in a quiet neighborhood

Avondale by the Sea is right on Beach Avenue, directly across the street from a wide expanse of white sand. The neighborhood surrounding the hotel is quiet and residential, though there's a beachfront restaurant just across from the hotel. Washington Street Mall (a pedestrian friendly shopping area) is only a six-minute walk away. One free parking space is provided with each room. Philadelphia's International airport is a closer drive to the hotel than the airport in Newark, New Jersey.

Rooms

Clean and basic rooms, some with balconies

Rooms at Avondale by the Sea are mostly designed as a clean place to sleep in between trips to the beach. The rooms are basic with tile floors and white walls. Beds have dated maroon floral bedspreads. There is a flat-screen TV with cable channels, free Wi-Fi, and a mini-fridge in all rooms, but an upgrade is required for a balcony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Some guests have complained about the size and layout of the bathrooms. For kitchen facilities, check rates at the Capri Motor Lodge.

Features

Free continental breakfast and an outdoor swimming pool

Free continental breakfast is served in the Avondale by the Sea's dining room each morning with basic fare like coffee, bagels, and cereal. The outdoor swimming pool (open seasonally) is surrounded by white sun loungers and there's a small kiddie pool for the little ones. Free parking is a nice perk. If you're looking for a hotel on the same stretch of Beach Avenue, but with a chic bar and restaurant, check out the Ocean Club Hotel.
