Bottom Line

The Albert Stevens Inn is a mid-range, three-pearl bed and breakfast in a peaceful, residential neighborhood in Cape May. The 10-room, antique-filled property attracts couples looking for a quiet place to stay with lots of great perks like free bike rentals, gourmet breakfasts, and an afternoon snack reception. Rooms are decorated in a traditional style and offer a mix of high-tech and low-tech entertainment (think flat-screen TVs and board games). The two verandas (one open-air and one covered) offer nice places to relax, but there is not much else in the way of features. The nearby Southern Mansion is a comparable bed and breakfast option.

Scene

Cozy, intimate interiors and pretty outdoor spaces

The Albert Stevens Inn was built by a doctor (Albert Stevens himself) as a private residence and doctor's suite at the end of the 1890s. The Victorian Queen Anne classic retains much of its original charm (though none of the doctors' needles) with a floating staircase, traditional color palette, and stained-glass windows -- plus a wooden veranda with rocking chairs. The entire third floor is dedicated to a suite. There's a cozy living room and pretty rose garden, but public spaces aren't as large here as one might expect from a typical bed and breakfast. Kids are welcome, but you probably won't find many of them here.

Location

Situated in a peaceful residential neighborhood, within a 10-minute walk of the beach

The Albert Stevens Inn stands in a quiet residential neighborhood dotted with other Victorian Queen Anne mansions. Washington Street Mall and the shore are about an eight-minute walk from the property, though the Inn does provide free bikes and backpack-style chairs as a fun way to get to the water even more quickly. Parking is included with the price of the room. There are restaurants about a block away, but the area is quite tranquil, making for a peaceful vacation spot.

Rooms

Period antiques and modern amenities that include flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and air-conditioning

Each of the 10 rooms and suites at The Albert Stevens Inn are tastefully decorated with lace window treatments and hand-printed wallpaper from Bradbury and Bradbury. The overall feel is traditional, but not fussy. Modern amenities, which include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges, are nice perks. Another fun detail is the inclusion of board games, such as Yahtzee and Scrabble, in every room. They can usually be found stored in the closets. Some rooms have electronic fireplaces. Bathrooms are clean and come with cozy bathrobes, though some have small showers. Some guests have complained that the cheaper rooms are small. Guests wishing to book the suite on the top floor should note that the last set of stairs leading to it is a bit steep.

Features

Gourmet breakfast, free bikes and Wi-Fi, and snacks in the afternoon

The Albert Stevens Inn offers guests lots of fun perks, though it doesn't have much in the way of features. Wi-Fi is free, as is parking. Other freebies include bike rentals and backpack-style beach chairs that can be easily transported to the sand. The hot breakfast included with the price of the room gets great reviews, as does the afternoon snack reception. Coffee, tea, and candy are available free of charge 24 hours a day.
