  • No beach at high tide, as water comes right up to inn

Bottom Line

This historic, luxurious inn is a local hot spot, thanks to its extremely popular restaurant. But it's still plenty relaxing, with beautiful water views from the restaurant and all eight of the attractive, beach-chic rooms. The property is also adults-only, which helps maintain the serene vibe. Overall, the inn's small size and cool factor mean that it sells out fast -- so book early.

Scene

Presidents, actors, and those in-the-know flock to The Red Inn

The Red Inn has been wowing politicians (President Franklin D. Roosevelt), celebrities (such as Isabella Rossellini), and other discerning guests since 1915. These days, it remains a staple in the Provincetown scene, thanks in part to the inn's hugely popular restaurant. The inn's historic building is over 200 years old -- which translates to low ceilings, creaky wooden floors, and thin walls. The decor is more antique beach chic than typical Cape Cod crisp -- whites, blues, and yellows are mixed with dark wooden furnishings and brick. The atmosphere at the inn is more hip and cool than quaint; a quality in part created by the fact that the inn is an adults-only property.

Location

At the residential end of Provincetown, a bit of a distance from the town center

The Red Inn is located almost at the very end of Commercial Street, Provincetown’s version of “Main Street.” So if you're going to this Cape Cod hotspot for the action, you may not appreciate the 15- to 20-minute walk to get to it. During the busy season, Commercial Street is a chaotic non-stop party with weekly events such as Carnival in August.Provincetown is one of the Cape’s hottest destinations for gay and lesbian travelers (and residents -- it has the highest percentage of same-sex couples in the country), but it's also a popular destination for families. Home to America’s first art colony, art lovers looking for original artwork will find plenty of galleries, exhibits and shops to browse. Those looking to converse with nature can check out Herring Cove, one of the most popular (albeit rocky) beaches in town. And for sunsets, you can’t beat Race Point. If you're looking for some wild nights, you'll find them here too. Clubs, bars, and restaurants are everywhere (especially lining Commercial Street), and you can catch many a show -- drag shows and celebrity impersonators are popular here.In town, it’s best to just ditch the car and either walk or rent a bike from one of the local shops because there is very little parking (two open lots are at either end of Commercial Street, and they aren't cheap), and it can be difficult to drive down a road when there are tons of people walking in the middle of the street.- 20-minute flight from Boston via Cape Air, which flies into Provincetown Municipal Airport

  • 3-hour drive from Boston Logan International Airport
  • 15-minute walk to center of Commercial Street
  • 20-minute drive to Wellfleet's famous beaches and drive-in movie theater

Rooms

Wake up to a water view without even leaving your bed.

The eight guest rooms at The Red Inn vary in size and features. Basically, there are three standard rooms, three suites, and two master residences. The negative here is that the standard rooms and even the suites are a bit cramped -- both the actual room and the bathroom. But they all have gorgeous views of the water (in fact, it feels like you're hanging over the harbor), as well as access to either the shared portion of the amazing sundeck or private access. For luxury and space, book the Cottage or the Residence.- Flat-screen TVs

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Gilchrest and Soames bath products
  • Air conditioning (and some ceiling fans)
  • Amazing water views
  • Some have fireplaces and mini-fridges
  • Suites have extra sitting room with sleeper sofa (and suites can be adjoined for more space)
  • Deft Haven Residence, a two-room, three-level suite, has direct access to the water and views of the water from all around. Plus a full kitchen, a Steinway baby grand piano, and more.
  • Chauffeur’s Cottage has a dining room and kitchen, plus separate entrance and direct water access.

Features

The popular restaurant is the inn's biggest draw.

  • Immense sun patio overlooking the harbor
  • Renowned restaurant, The Red Inn Restaurant, is a local hot spot serving fresh seafood and more.
  • Daily Raw Bar Happy Hour popular with locals and guests alike; weekly during the off-season.
  • Free parking
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Lively waterfront bar scene
