Bottom Line

Pleasant Bay Village is a 58-room, mid-range hotel situated in the centrally located town of Chatham, about a 10-minute drive from the town center. This seasonal property offers smaller rooms for two as well as larger units for families that come with full kitchens. All rooms include AC, free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, luxurious toiletries, and outdoor sitting areas. The decor throughout is dated, but the facilities are well-maintained and homey. The hotel may not be beachfront, but it does have six acres of outdoor space with charmingly landscaped gardens, a spacious outdoor pool and whirlpool, a koi pond, cascading stone waterfalls, an outdoor play area for kids, and other nooks and crannies to explore. Chatham Tides Waterfront Lodging is a similar range hotel in the area -- it has less property features, but is situated on a private beach.

Scene

Beautifully landscaped, zen-inspired grounds and cozy, homey interiors

At Pleasant Bay Village, six acres of beautifully landscaped, zen-inspired grounds surround several buildings with weathered gray cedar shakes shingle siding in classic Cape Cod style. The grounds feature little delights like curved moon archways and stone pathways that lead to sitting areas, a children’s playground, a ping-pong table, a large koi pond, or a spacious outdoor pool. Cascading rock waterfalls and locally made art and statues add a whimsical air. The lobby shows off Pleasant Bay’s style, which is slightly dated but relaxed and homey with wood floors, floral curtains, and a smattering of Persian-style area rugs. Velvety blue couches, beach-themed paintings by local artists, and wood furniture -- such as a cradle and bench filled with books -- decorate the area. Smokey the parrot also resides in the lobby, and a resident cat and dog can also be found on the property. With its relaxing atmosphere, this property is ideal for vacationing couples and families. Open April through mid-October, Pleasant Bay Village has rooms available by the day or week, with minimum stay policies during certain busy times of the year.

Rooms

Rooms, suites, and efficiencies with a range of amenities, but dated decor

Guest rooms at Pleasant Bay Village range in size, color palette, and age (as of summer 2015, the property has continued to renovate older rooms), but all have similar decor, which feels like a version of an '80s motel room -- think floral or brightly patterned comforters with matching drapes, light yellow or baby blue walls, patterned wall-to-wall carpeting, and pleather armchairs. This dated style is common for Cape Cod hotels, though, and guests find the rooms clean, well-maintained, and spacious. Rooms range in size from the smallest One Double Bed Rooms to larger Suites and Efficiencies with full kitchens. But even the smallest rooms are stocked with amenities, including mini-fridges, Keurig coffeemakers, irons and ironing boards, and 32-inch HDTVs. And all rooms, even the most basic, have little indoor sitting areas, desks, and outside deck sitting areas. All rooms also have AC units and heat as well as free Wi-Fi access. Suites and Efficiencies include stoves, microwaves, coffeemakers, dishwashers, full refrigerators, toasters, dishware, cookware, and utensils. Bathrooms are roomy but basic with beige tiled floors and walls, a vanity, and a combination shower and tub. They come equipped with a hairdryer and luxury Zents toiletries that are usually only found at high-end hotels. Maid service comes daily, with daily turndown service during the height of the season. All rooms are non-smoking, and six rooms allow pets (with no extra fee). Some guests find that rooms can feel stuffy or musty, which is typical of Cape Cod properties not used over the winter months. Other guests complain that thin walls make it easy to hear rambunctious neighbors or street traffic.

Features

Beautifully landscaped grounds with outdoor pool and other nooks and crannies

The six acres of gorgeously landscaped grounds make Pleasant Bay Village stand out from other three-pearl Cape Cod hotels. In addition to the charming nooks and crannies -- cascading waterfalls, locally made outdoor art and statues, and a delightful koi pond -- there is also plenty to do.The main attraction outdoors is the large pool which extends from four feet in the shallow end to 10 feet in the deep end where a small cascading waterfall flows into the water. The pool’s surrounded by concrete tiling, blue and white lounge chairs with side tables, and a smattering of tables with navy umbrellas. A freeform whirlpool is set off the side near a small stone wall that separates the pool area from a beautifully planted garden area. On another part of the property, a swing set and play area sits among pine trees, with lounge chairs nearby for parents to relax. The play area features a climbing wall, a tire swing, toddler swings, a fort, monkey bars, and more.A small self-service laundry area includes two coin-operated driers and washers (as well as a few vintage arcade games). While the area isn’t incredibly clean, it’s functional. A charming dining area features wood floors covered in Persian-style carpeting and white walls decorated in local art and stained glass windows. While food doesn’t come standard with the room rate, made-to-order breakfast and lunch are available from the restaurant, and guests are generally happy with the food (especially the blueberry pancakes and French toast). Lunch is served poolside during the height of the season.
