Situated on a hilltop and steps from a private beach,
the Hawthorne Motel provides a relaxing destination with stunning views of
sunrises and sunsets over the Atlantic. This 28-room, budget motel has rooms
with one or two beds and the option of efficiency kitchenettes. Guests have
reported a lack of space and thin walls as the biggest drawbacks which makes the motel's private two-bedroom Cottage -- with a full-size kitchen, living room, deck, and location on the beach -- an ideal alternative. The few on-site
features (lounge chairs, beach towels, and grills) and high rates (for this level of hotel) are
common for hotels in the area with private beach access. For travelers on a
budget, it may be worth checking the prices at Carriage House Inn, a
bed-and-breakfast less than a mile from the shore with similar amenities.
Scene
This hilltop motel, popular with couples, has a short path through grassy grounds to a private beach.
The Hawthorne Motel is made up of three buildings: a
single-story building, a two-story building, and a cottage on the beach. The
motel is mostly gray with white accents and sits on the top of a grassy hill.
Stairs and a sandy path lead from the hotel to a private beach. The lobby has an eccentric mix of pieces such as blue leather chairs near a fireplace, white and blue floral-printed chairs, and paintings of towns and boats. Also in the lobby is a guest desk, front desk, microwave,
coffee, and a bowl of free fresh fruit. Guests are mostly couples of varying ages and
some families.
Location
On the coast of Aunt Lydia's Cove and eight minutes from bustling Main Street
The Hawthorne Motel is located steps from a private beach that
lines the bay of Aunt Lydia’s Cove, and it's only an
eight-minute walk to Main Street, a bustling street of Chatham lined with
restaurants, bookstores, shopping, and entertainment. Chatham Lighthouse is a
16-minute walk or a three-minute drive down Main Street. For those wanting to
take a fishing charter boat, Capeshores Charters is an 11-minute walk away. Guests
can use their kitchenettes or the motel’s grills by stocking up at Chatham
Village Market, eight minutes away by car, or heading to Chatham Pier Fish
Market for fresh fish, only an eleven-minute walk from the motel.
Rooms
A private cottage or rooms with the option of one or two beds, kitchenettes, and views of the ocean
The rooms at the Hawthorne Motel have a blue-and-white
color scheme that reflects a beach or floral theme. Guests have the
choice of one or two beds ranging from twin beds to king-size beds and the
choice of a budget-friendly efficiency option. Efficiency rooms have less space than standard
rooms, but each includes a kitchenette with a microwave, mini-fridge, two-burner stove
top, sink, Keurig coffee machine, and kitchen appliances. Standard rooms
have mini-fridges and coffeemakers with Starbucks coffee to brew. The
bathrooms of the motel are small with no counter space, though a few small
shelves have been added. Bathrooms also include shower/tub combos, hairdryers,
and toiletries, including makeup remover wipes. Some guests report beds being uncomfortable and the ability to hear noises from neighboring rooms. The option
of rooms with ocean views is a nice touch, as are lounge chairs on the grassy hill in
front of some first-floor rooms, and chairs on the balconies of second-floor rooms.Lastly, the Hawthorne Motel does offer a rentable
cottage that is 50 feet from the water, slightly closer than the rooms of the
motel. The Cottage has all the comforts of a house: two bedrooms (king-size bed
and two twin-size beds), a living room, full kitchen, dining table, deck, and outdoor picnic table with a grill and lawn chairs. It also provides a
42-inch flat-screen TV, VCR, and phone.
Features
Several beach-focused amenities but little else
The motel offers a few amenities for relaxation and the
beach. Picnic tables and lawn chairs are sprinkled around the grounds for
guests to use, as is a gas grill. As for the beach, the motel provides beach
towels and a variety of beach and lounge chairs. Near the lobby is an ice machine
and a soda machine, and in the lobby is a guest desk with a laptop, printer,
and fax machine. There's no gym or restaurant.
