The 133-room Radisson Blu 1835 Hotel & Thalasso is an upscale property with an ideal location overlooking Cannes' yacht-filled harbor. Rooms are mostly modern, though generic and quite small. They feature flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and minibars, and upgraded rooms add small balconies. Some rooms feature superb city or sea views. Highlights include a large spa (though there's a daily fee to access it and the gym) and sea views from the rooftop bar. Healthy fare is available at the spa, and the rooftop dinner spot has additional outstanding views of the area. Events spaces and the terrace serve both business and social gatherings. Travelers looking for a less expensive option in the area could check out the Eden Hotel, which also has a spa, restaurant, and pools.
Scene
Modern chain hotel with large spa and trendy rooftop bar and terrace
We've seen our share of Radisson Blu hotels across the world and they range from chic to bland. This outpost falls somewhere in the middle, though its location is hard to beat. First impressions are nice and fitting for the Cote d'Azur setting. The lobby is open and bright, with a mirrored front desk and lots of modern lighting and windows to let in the Mediterranean light. Several seating areas with velvet sofas, lavender velvet chairs, and shaggy tub chairs provide places where guests can hang out, though most of the action here takes place elsewhere (like the gorgeous rooftop terrace and bar). Hallways to guest rooms are lined with purple carpets, the hotel's signature color -- unfortunately, it's not the most stylish design choice and contributes to this hotel's overall generic style. Regardless, the name-brand appeal and spot-on location do make this a popular choice in Cannes, and the majority of guests here are couples.
Location
Near the Old Port and within a 10-minute walk of the town center
This hotel is situated in the old port of Cannes overlooking the harbor, a 10-minute walk from Palais des Festivals et des Congres. Once in town, there are numerous cafes, bars, restaurants, and boutiques to visit. Other nearby attractions include the Castre Museum, the Forville Market, and shopping in Le Suquet. Closer at hand, the beach is just two minutes away on foot. The Cote d'Azur Airport in Nice is about 30 minutes away by car, or a little over an hour by public transportation.
Rooms
Pleasant rooms with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and electric kettles; some have balconies and sea views
Rooms are on the small side, but they are pleasant enough, with color schemes that include the hotel's signature lavender hue, along with gray and light wood tones. The look is similar and fairly basic across all categories, with IKEA-style furniture, patterned carpets, and mirrors that serve as art on the walls. Amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, and electric kettles. Family rooms can accommodate up to four people and are stocked with PlayStation systems, games, and access to the kids' club. Modern bathrooms are tiled and come with toiletries, hairdryers, and shower/tub combos. Robes and slippers are provided. Guests who stay in suites get separate living areas and special amenities, including free lounge chairs on the nearby beach. Some rooms have balconies, and views are of the city, the port, gardens, or the sea. Keep in mind that noise from the street can be an issue.
Features
Three restaurants, rooftop bar, huge spa with aqua-therapy, fitness center, meeting rooms, and free Wi-Fi
Features are fairly numerous at this large hotel, though there are some surprising fees built in that are a bit disappointing. Guests can start their day with a breakfast buffet in 30° Celsius Restaurant on the ground floor. Alfresco dining on the terrace is available in warmer months. Le 360° is the rooftop restaurant that serves dinner alongside panoramic views of Cannes. The interior space is elegant and sophisticated, with white tablecloths, lavender chairs, white columns, and lavender mood lighting overhead. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the city. The views are even more spectacular from the adjacent bar and terrace. This space can be reserved for special events. Located in the spa, Restaurant le Bio serves healthy fare near the pool. The hotel's huge spa has 46 treatment rooms for massages, facials, body treatments, and other services. It also offers an indoor/outdoor heated saltwater pool, a fully equipped fitness center, whirlpool, hammam, and steam rooms. Many of the treatments use seawater as a primary ingredient. Keep in mind that there's a daily fee to access this entire area and it can get crowded. Classes and private trainers are available for those looking to maintain a fitness regimen. Free loungers are set up on the sand for guests in higher-category rooms, and there's a kids' club as well (note: it's only offered in high season). Five meeting rooms are available for business or social gatherings, some with sea views. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
