This family-owned, 48-room property may not shine as brightly as it once did, but its reasonable rate and convenient location -- just three blocks from the beach and close to town -- make it an attractive three-pearl choice. The lobby's homage to classic cinema and the Cannes Film Festival's maiden years add charm to the dated decor throughout. Rooms are pleasant and clean, with balconies and ample amenities. Guest rave about the rooftop pool and sundeck with sweeping views of the sea. One nice perk is free access to the private Belle Plage beach. However, there's no fitness center or restaurant, and breakfast isn't included. Clarion Suites Cannes Croisette has comparable amenities for a similar rate and is closer to town.
Scene
Rooftop pool with views, comfortable atmosphere, and nostalgic decor give faded glamour a boost
Hotel Belle Plage, owned by the same family for four generations, is atmospherically nostalgic for icons of movie history and for the Cannes Film Festival's early years. Fittingly, it feels more like an old, local movie house than a massive, cookie-cutter multiplex. Guests of the hotel tend to be business travelers and those vacationing on a budget, including families, who'd rather forgo glitzy digs in town, spend less, and be close to the beach. The lobby's decor recollects a film from the 1940s -- or the dressing room of one of its stars -- bathed in pale pink and mauve, with framed headshots of famous actors and Hollywood Regency-inspired furnishings. The salmon-tinted glass, smoked marble, Festival memorabilia, and themed murals (including one with Fellini in the foreground sitting in a director's chair holding a megaphone) are an extra layer of detail. The wide, curved staircase that sweeps up to the balconied breakfast area makes a dramatic statement, and there's a lobby lounge with a bar and clusters of burnt orange settees. But the most glamorous spot to bask in the Cote d'Azur sun and take in stellar views of the sea and town, is on the rooftop sundeck by the pool.
Location
A 10-minute walk to Cannes' scene, but within three blocks of the beach
Hotel Belle Plage is located southwest of town in a business and residential district, across from Square Mistral, a lovely park with gardens and a playground. Rue Meynadier, the oldest shopping street in Cannes, with upscale boutiques and gourmet shops, is a 10-minute walk. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to reach the center of town on foot for banks, supermarkets, and chain stores. The closest beach is Belle Plage, a three-minute walk from the hotel's door. To reach Plage de la Croisette takes almost a half-hour although it's only a five-minute drive. Le Suquet, the Old Quarter, is about a 10-minute walk. It's a 15-minute walk to Gare de Cannes to catch the TGV, about a 30-minute drive to Nice-Côte d’Azur Airport, and roughly 10 minutes by car to Cannes-Mandelieu Airport.
Rooms
Slightly uutdated furnishings but jazzed-up with balconies and flat-screen TVs
Rooms are a bit dated, but comfortable and tidy. Except for understocked minibars, they have ample amenities and balconies that afford views of town or the distant sea. Basic decor is spiffed up with details like antique-style tables, fabric-covered armchairs with curved legs, mirrored closet doors, and beds with soft peach and chocolate brown floral prints. Colors blend with the blush-tinged light wood furniture for a pulled-together look. For amenities, there's air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, desks, electric kettles, safes, and free coffee, tea, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms are quiet thanks to double-glazed windows and heavy curtains. Spacious bathrooms have deep tubs, separate toilets, and old wall-mounted hairdryers. However, some guests say that the hinged shower doors are awkward to use with the handheld showerheads. Higher-end rooms have love seats, and baths with bidets and double sinks; those with soaking tubs lack separate showers.
Features
Free beach access and rooftop pool with sundeck; fee for breakfast and no full-service restaurant
Hotel Belle Plage has a bright breakfast room, but there's no full restaurant. Hot items are on-offer at the breakfast buffet, which isn't included in the room rate. The food is pricey and gets mixed reviews. The best bet is to grab items from a nearby cafe and take treats up to the rooftop to eat poolside while gazing at the turquoise water. The pool is small but inviting, and there's a shower for rinsing off after a dip. Bar service makes it possible to spend the afternoon on a chaise with a drink in-hand. Alternatively, guests can head down to the lobby lounge for a cocktail. Guest are given free access to a private section of Belle Plage beach, which has white umbrellas and chairs along the shoreline. The hotel has a concierge, free Wi-Fi throughout, and a business center with a public computer and printer. Parking at the garage next to the hotel's entrance fills up quickly and costs extra, but there's street parking and other area lots. The hotel allows small pets for a nominal fee.
