Bottom Line

The Oasis Palm Hotel is a family-friendly, Mexican-themed resort aimed at the budget end of the all-inclusive market. While facilities are extensive -- especially for eating and drinking -- rooms are decidedly lackluster and bathrooms could use a makeover. Children are particularly well looked after with plenty of kids' activities and sometimes noisy entertainment. The hotel provides good value for money for families, but couples wanting to unwind in peace and quiet should look elsewhere.

Scene

Family-friendly all-inclusive resort with Mexican theme and lively vibe

With its pink and white facade fronted with a row of familiar red, white, and green flags, the Mexican theme of this all-inclusive, family-friendly resort is evident from the outset. Stepping inside, visitors are met with a vibrant and typically Mexican color scheme as well as potted agave plants, colorful Mexican art pieces, and colonial-style gilt-framed mirrors. The scene is unpretentious and the property has a typical Cancun resort layout, with tiered modern architecture and an extensive pool terrace leading to a palm-fringed, white-sand beach that's far from Cancun's nicest. As a budget-friendly, all-inclusive option popular with families with small kids -- as well as Spring Breakers -- the atmosphere can get lively, so it's not ideal for romancing couples looking for a peaceful and relaxing vacation.

Location

North end of Kukulcan Boulevard, close to nightspots and next to the ferry port to Isla Mujeres

The hotel is situated in Cancun's Hotel Zone at the north end of the Kukulcan Boulevard, a long stretch of road lined with numerous hotels that separates the Nichupte lagoon on one side from the Caribbean sea on the other. The hotel is about a five-minute drive from Cancun's celebrated nightspots, including the ever-popular Hard Rock Cafe, Senor Frog's, and Coco Bongo. Boat trips to Isla Mujeres leave from the port right next to the hotel. Cancun International Airport is a 25-minute drive away.

Rooms

Simply decorated rooms with sea or sunset views but no balconies

The hotel has 470 air-conditioned rooms, most of which are simply decorated in a colonial Mexican style with traditional wooden furnishings, wrought-iron beds, patterned bedspreads, and white-tile floors. Themed rooms for kids are also available. In-room amenities are basic, but all rooms have flat-screen TVs. Fees apply for use of minibars, safes, and Wi-Fi. Views are either of the ocean or lagoon (with lovely sunsets), but rooms do not have balconies and some bathrooms are showing signs of wear.

Features

Multiple bars and restaurants, long serpentine swimming pool, and excellent kids' entertainment

The hotel's all-inclusive plans covers meals in its six mostly Mexican-themed restaurants and drinks in its eight bars -- which include a swim-up and beach bar. The outdoor swimming pool snakes along almost the entire length of the hotel and is surrounded by plenty of tropical plants. Live music performances are regularly staged poolside. Children are particularly well catered to, with a kids' club providing supervised activities and entertainment throughout the day as well as a free Captain Hook’s pirate cruise. Although the hotel's beach is not the prettiest in Cancun, the sand is of the white-power variety and the water is generally shallow and calm
