Bottom Line

The Savoy Beach Hotel is a sprawling luxury resort set a few hundred feet back from the Tyrrhenian Sea. A popular destination both with families and wedding parties, this is a grand property with traditionally elegant decor. There is little immediately surrounding the resort, and besides a formal restaurant that gets fairly consistent high marks from guests, little in the way of alternative dining options or shops (unless guests take a car or an expensive taxi into the town of Paestum, which is about three miles away). Rooms are plain but elegant and comfortable with minibars and marble bathrooms. Guests have noted that the amenities, in particular the beautiful, greenery-surrounded pool, are often occupied by events.

Oyster Hotel Review

Savoy Beach Hotel

Scene

Grand hotel near the beach

The common areas at the Savoy Beach Hotel, both indoor and outdoor, are characterized by sweeping expanses of elegantly arranged, often unused space punctuated by decorative blue ceramic tile in the latter, and white marble in the former. The two-story lobby, centered around a double column of grandiose spiral staircases, is set with couches for sitting and lounging, but also a multitude of tables set with beach-themed tchotchkes and decorative lamps. As some have noted, the grounds are wedding-ready, and frequently employed for this purpose. The restaurant is fine dining only; those in need of simply a light bite may need to drive to town.

Location

Along a country road parallel to the Tyrrhenian Sea about three miles from the town of Paestum

The hotel is situated about 500 feet from the beach, which is accessible through a path in the pine forest separating the property from the coast. Walking to the modern town of Paestum is possible but a lengthy trip (40 minutes) along a busy road. There is no direct public transportation route between the hotel and the town; cabs can be summoned through the hotel, though they are pricey. The town of Paestum is about an hour-and-a-half drive from the Naples airport.

Rooms

Simple, but comfortable rooms, some with wood floors or carpeting

White or peach colored walls are handsomely offset by a rarity in the Italian countryside: real wood floors, or carpet, as opposed to the more popular choice of ceramic tile, which does make an appearance in some of the rooms. Bedding here consists of peaceful white duvets; besides a commode and chest of drawers and the occasional striped easy chair, there is little by way of ornamentation in these rooms. All have small flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, safes, hairdryers, and magnifying mirrors. Most rooms have full baths; some have balconies.

Features

A outdoor pool surrounded by flowers and plants, and indoor pool, a fitness center, and a well-liked restaurant

A large, semicircular outdoor pool gets gradually deeper in concentric half-circles; it is surrounded by lush vegetation, including bougainvilleas, palm trees, and lots of shrubbery; the feel is luxurious and tropical. There is an outdoor hot tub, as well as an indoor pool for the winter months. A medium-sized fitness center has a nautilus machine, a stationary bike, a treadmill, a small handful of weight machines, and some free weights. Guests have noted overall that the food is of a high standard, though some have complained that hot dishes are not included in breakfast and incur an additional charge.
