Bottom Line

The family-run, mid-range Marcaneto Hotel is located on the hills of Scario, with fantastic views of nearby sea and mountains that can be seen from various points throughout the property. The hotel has 61 guest rooms with simple decor and all have balconies and free Wi-Fi. Some of the rooms are dated; ask for one of the rooms that was renovated in 2013 if you're after something more modern. The grounds are small but covered with lush gardens and wooded areas. There's a large outdoor pool with a bar, a breakfast room with outdoor seating that serves free breakfast every morning, a fitness room, and a spacious lounge with a pool table and flat-screen TV. Note that this hotel closes in the winter.

Scene

Spacious, airy front lobby and lots of outdoor spaces

The front lobby of the Marcaneto is open and spacious, with large floor-to-ceiling windows that make it feel bright and airy. There are several seating areas nestled into windowed coves with sea foam-green couches. Off of the lobby is a small covered porch with chairs that looks out on beautiful scenery. The hotel has various outdoor areas for relaxing, including covered patios and beautiful, lush gardens. Although there's not much for business travelers, it is a great option for couples and families who are looking for a laid-back atmosphere close to the sea.

Location

In a wooded area with views of the Masseta coast, near the charming medieval town of Scario

The hotel is located in the small, coastal town of Scario in the Salerno region and is immediately surrounded by wooded areas and private villas. It's a 15-minute drive from the town's charming medieval center and a 10-minute drive to the House Museum Ortega. The hotel has amazing views of the gorgeous Masseta coast, and is just a 40-minute drive to both the stunning Cala Bianca Beach and to the Vallo di Diano National Park. The Infreschi Maritime Wildlife Park takes about 50 minutes to reach by car. The Salerno Airport is a 90-minute drive away. Parking at the hotel is free and there's a free shuttle that brings guests to a nearby beach.

Rooms

Standard and more contemporary Deluxe Rooms, both with furnished balconies

Guest can choose between Standard and Deluxe Rooms.  Standards are simple and look outdated, with basic decor and furniture. They have green carpeting, white walls, desks, worn couches, and tube-style TVs. Standard Room bathrooms include dated looking pink tiled floors and walls. Showers are small. The decor in Deluxe Rooms is more modern, with blue tiled floors, simple, but contemporary furniture, and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms in these rooms come with blue mosaic tiling, a glass-door shower, and a bidet. All rooms have mini-fridges and free Wi-Fi as well as private balconies with tables and chairs that look out on either the beautiful sea and mountains or, the less appealing back of the hotel.

Features

Outdoor pool, free breakfast, and free Wi-Fi

The hotel's best feature is probably the cute swimming pool on an astroturf balcony. The pool deck has fantastic views of the mountains and bay behind it. It's surrounded by blue lounge chairs and umbrellas. A pool bar is adjacent, built on a platform overlooking the water. Free breakfast is served daily in a breakfast room that resembles a boring dining hall (though blue tablecloths fancy the space up a bit), but guests can also eat their morning meal on a covered patio with views of the surrounding gardens and mountains in the distance -- an obvious improvement from the indoor option. Other features include a modern fitness center with several simple machines, an indoor lounge with a bar, and a pool table. There's also a small covered play area with ping pong (though the net is ripped) a swing set, and a slide, but families should note that it's situated on a brick patio rather than on soft ground. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
