The family-run, 56-room Hotel Terme La Pergola is a homey mid-range property in the hills between Casamicciola Terme and Lacco Ameno, near Ischia's northern coast. Basic, traditional rooms have air-conditioning and balconies or terraces, and some have splendid views of the surrounding hill or the hotel's thermal pools. The on-site restaurant and spa are both major pluses for the couples and families who pass through, as are the hotel's trips to Crateca Winery and gardens, though we found the spa to be a bit clinical. The hotel provides a free beach shuttle and free Wi-Fi. Guests looking for slightly more upmarket accommodations should consider Terme Manzi Hotel & Spa, which has a contemporary spa and ornate rooms, though rates are higher.
Scene
A homey, family-run hotel with wonderful views and a friendly atmosphere
A welcoming and homey atmosphere runs throughout this family-run hotel, an impression that starts in the cozy lobby, where pink hues and soft greens punctuate the mostly white space. Wicker furniture sits throughout and there is a small TV lounge area. Views are nice from many vantage points around the property, including the classic restaurant and the many outdoor terraces set with tables and chairs or lounge chairs. There are classical statues throughout the grounds and several areas have been thoughtfully landscaped with shrubs, flowers, and fruit trees. Similar to other properties in the area, the spa has a clinical atmosphere that lacks personality, with floral tile and red walls in treatment rooms. One of the highlights here is the off-site winery, Cantine Crateca, which has an outdoor seating area with magnificent sea views and a wine cellar. Lunches and wine tastings there are extremely popular with guests, who include couples and families.
Location
Peaceful hillside location outside of Lacco Ameno and Casamicciola
The Hotel Terme La Pergola is on a steep green hill in a peaceful residential area in the hills above Lacco Ameno and Casamicciola Terme, near Ischia's north coast. There are shops and restaurants in Lacco Ameno, though walks into town take 20 minutes and the hills can be steep coming back. A drive into Lacco Ameno or Casamicciola takes less than 10 minutes. The Museo Archeologico di Pithecusae is a five-minute drive from the hotel, while gorgeous San Montano Bay and Negombo Thermal Park are less than 10 minutes away by car. Castello Aragonese, an iconic Medieval castle situated on its own island and connected to Ischia by a land bridge, is a 25-minute drive from the hotel, while the island's commercial heart, Ischia Port, takes 20 minutes to reach by road. There is no airport on the island and the only way to access Ischia is by boat. Ferries to Naples take up to an hour an 40 minutes.
Rooms
Simple, traditional rooms with balconies or terraces
While the rooms here won't win any style awards, and though they are slightly dated, they are more pleasant than some other hotels in the area, and the traditional spaces have attractive green wood furniture and classic ceramic tile floors throughout. A simple piece of framed, pastel-hued art hangs on the yellow walls over the beds, which are covered with subtly patterned bedspreads. All rooms are air-conditioned and have tiny flat-screen TVs as well as desks and balconies or terraces, many with lovely views of the pools and the hillside. Bathrooms are simple and compact, with stand-alone sinks and no counter space, with extremely narrow corner showers surrounded by shower curtains. Generic bar soap and hairdryers are provided.
Features
Three pools and on-site spa plus winery excursions
Like many hotels across the island, the thermal pools are a huge draw here. There are three of them throughout the property. The largest is an oval-shaped mineral pool while the other mineral pool has jets is surrounded by attractive trees and plants as well as benches for seating. Red and orange lounge chairs are offered at the enclosed thermal water pool, which is covered in blue mosaic tiles. Traditional Mediterranean cuisine and the included breakfast are crafted with ingredients from an off-site garden and served at the traditional on-site restaurant. Breakfast has plenty of choices and cocktails and beer are offered at the lobby bar. All-inclusive packages area available. Additionally, weekly al fresco lunches and wine tastings are offered at the off-site Cantine Crateca, though they cost extra. Mud treatments, mineral baths, inhalations, and thermal therapies are available at the on-site spa, and there is a free beach shuttle. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and the front desk is staffed 24 hours a day.
