Bottom Line

La Petite Folie is undeniably special. It's a luxurious B&B in a charming mansion with a few high-end apartments spread over two nearby 14th-century buildings. Interiors are particularly impressive, and each room has been lovingly and distinctly styled with luxury touches. The property is set right in the heart of Honfleur, within walking distance of local attractions and restaurants. Beware that there's no elevator (in keeping with historical preservation laws), and stairwells can be steep. Parking is limited. Rates may be high for a B&B, but are reasonable for a hotel with such class and attention to detail.

La Petite Folie

Scene

Elegant 19th-century mansion house with beautifully styled interiors

After entering through a pair of elegant iron gates, you can't fail to be impressed by the splendid early-19th-century mansion beyond. Built in 1830 by a sea captain, the mansion is the main building of La Petite Folie, which also includes a quaint 14th-century home just next door. Interiors are designed by the French-American couple who own the property and are beautifully rendered in a modern take on the "directoire" style. Eclectic furnishings are blended with sumptuous decor and exotic curios to create a sophisticated and arty, yet homey, ambiance. The manicured garden feels secluded and features an unusual Moorish-inspired private saloon hidden in a small, ornate building that was once a bathhouse. The intimate ambience attracts mostly couples looking for romantic getaway as well as the occasional family with kids taking advantage the self-catering apartments. Note that children are not allowed at the B&B part of the property.

Set in the heart of Honfleur, just steps from the harbor

La Petite Folie is located in the very center of the town of Honfleur in northwest France, just next to its famous harbor and surrounded with historical houses, most of which date back to the 14th century. There are also plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bakeries in the quaint medieval streets in the immediate area, while the charming Notre-Dame de Grace church is a ten-minute walk away. The golden sand beach of Plage du Butin is around 15 minutes away on foot, while further down the coast is Plage du Vasouy and other D-Day landing beaches. Normandy's historic capital city, Rouen, is an hour's drive, while Paris takes around two hours away by car without traffic.
