Bottom Line

The Chateau
des Fougeres is a
charming 19th-century manor house surrounded by beautiful grounds. Although not exactly a chateau, the property is lovely, though the modern and minimal interior decor scheme can make it feel a little empty, especially in the spacious guest rooms. The location is excellent, within view of the sea and a short drive to town. The upper-mid-range property is light on facilities, as might be expected from a B&B, and rates are high for this type of lodging.

Scene

Charming 19th-century manor house with tastefully modernized interiors

Not to be confused with the famous 11th-century castle of the same name, the Chateau des
Fougeres is a superbly maintained and charmingly presented 19th-century
manor house. Built in 1860 by a Parisian industrialist, the
main building blends steep Normandy-style gray-slate roofs with a Neoclassical facade, while the peaceful grounds include sprawling lawns,
ancient trees, and meadows bursting with wildflowers -- the
English Channel can be seen in the distance. Interiors have been
tastefully modernized in muted tones and wooden floors. Antique
furnishings and trophy animal heads are dotted around the hallways, adding a splash
of country house ambience. There are five guest rooms in the main house; a separate part-timber cottage annex
in the garden houses a three additional guest rooms.

Location

Set in peaceful grounds, a five-minute drive from Deauville town center

This hotel is
located in the heights of Deauville in beautiful parkland surrounded by old
trees and wildflowers. The property is down a short dirt track off the main
road into Deauville center, which is a five-minute drive away.  The rugged sandy Deauville Beach is just beyond the town's famous casinos and grand hotels and takes under 10 minutes by car.
The nearest train station is Trouville-Deauville, a five-minute drive into
town, while getting to the Saint-Gatien Airport takes 10 minutes in the other direction. The
pretty town of Honfleur and some of the D-Day landing beach are a 20-minute
drive away, while Paris is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive on a good
day.

Rooms

Sparsely furnished rooms with spacious contemporary bathrooms

The property has
eight rooms in total, five in the main building and three in the cottage annex.
Decor leans heavily towards the simple and sober, with muted tones and contemporary
furnishings bordering on generic. Rooms are spacious and have either
polished wooden floors or hessian carpets. A (non-working) brick fireplace is a nice detail in the Double Full Room. Manor house rooms include distant views of the sea. There are free Wi-Fi and large flat-screen
TVs, but little else as far as amenities. Contemporary ,individually styled bathrooms are large
and most include both walk-in showers and tubs. Weekly rates are available.

Features

Free Wi-Fi and plenty of parking space

As the Chateau des Fougeres is a B&B, it lacks many of the facilities commonly found in hotels. However, breakfast is served each morning in the simple dining room and guests are free to use the kitchen facilities. Wi-Fi is available free of charge throughout the property and there is ample free parking on-site.
