Chain-hotel feel
The Hostellerie
Du Vallon is a relatively upscale hotel occupying a fine, though modern-built,
piece of traditional Normandy-style architecture. Its residential location is
fairly quiet, though still within walking distance of town and the beach --
though it's mostly uphill on the way back. The 62 rooms are more spacious than most
and standard amenities are all there, while Superior Rooms open to balconies.
Spa facilities are a bonus and the lounge bar is pleasant -- if a little
pricey. Overall, rates and facilities compare very well with hotels in the area, though the property's
chain feel makes it all a bit unexceptional.
Scene
Typical Normandy style mansion with traditional and familiar chain feel
Although built in
the 1990s, the Hostellerie Du Vallon occupies a fine example of typical Normandy-style
architecture -- a semi-timbered facade with charming wooden balconies and
red-tiled roofs. Stepping inside, the traditional styling continues, with
exposed-beamed ceilings and a wood-paneled reception desk, while floral drapes
and comfy furnishings inject a bit of hominess. Despite these efforts, the
ambience doesn't quite manage to shake off the atmosphere of a chain-hotel, and
hallways feel a little drab and dated. Clientele tends largely towards the
older vacationing couple who enjoy more traditionally styled accommodation with the reassurance of a familiar brand.
Location
Set in peaceful residential area of Trouville, 15 minutes' walk from the beach
The hotel is
located in a largely quiet and residential neighborhood surrounded by narrow
winding roads lined with quaint local houses. The charming Trouville town
center with cute cafes and restaurants is about a 10-minute walk away, and its
fine sandy beach another five minutes beyond. The swanky Deauville seafront
with its fancy casinos and luxury hotels is about a five-minute drive away. The
nearest train station of Trouville-Deauville is easily accessed by foot in
under 10 minutes, while a nearby tourist office is a couple blocks from the
hotel.
Rooms
Bright, spacious rooms -- some with furnished balconies
Most of the
hotel's 62 rooms are bright and spacious, blending traditionally styled
furnishings with modern finishes in warm and metallic tones. Free Wi-Fi is
accessible in all rooms, while tea/coffee facilities and 26-inch flat-screen
TVs with cable come as standard -- though with few English-speaking channels. Each bathroom has a pleasant, contemporary finish and most include shower/tubcombos, though some just stand-in showers, as well as wall-mounted hairdryers
and soap dispensers. Superior rooms open to furnished balconies with views over
the Trouville rooftops.
Features
Small but well-equipped spa and billiards room
Although there's no
restaurant on-site, a hot and cold buffet breakfast is served each morning in
the dining area -- it's not included in the price but is reasonably priced. A
pleasant bar and lounge area serves drinks (which can be pricey), which can be
enjoyed on the terrace in warmer months. A small spa -- with indoor swimming pool,
sauna, steam room, and hot tub -- is an unexpected bonus, as is a games room with
billiards. Guests arriving by car have access to free parking on-site,
and Wi-Fi is also free of charge throughout.
