Contemporary
apartments with well-equipped kitchens
Historic center

Unattractive area
The Adagio Caen
Centre is an upper-middle-range, 120-apartment hotel set in the modern, and not
particularly attractive, center of Caen. The picturesque historical center is
just within walking distance, however, and it's easy access to and from the
nearby train station. Apartments are smart and modern with excellent kitchens
and bathrooms, though beds are a letdown. Overall, if you want self-catering
close to the station at very reasonable rates, this place is a strong option --
just don't expect too much in the way of charm.
Scene
Quirky and contemporary new-build hotel
There's not a
great deal to get excited about with the Adagio Caen Centre. Housed in a smart
but characterless new-build on the corner of a busy junction, it's never going
to be the most glamorous of hotels, but it does make some efforts to
distinguish itself. Through the key-card controlled sliding doors a
pebble-stone tiled hallway leads to a funky, curving reception desk and a lobby
dotted with quirky molded-mesh furnishings, wood-log tables, and oddly drooping
vegetation, all lit by sunlight though large windows and hanging tear-drop
lighting. The interior design can all feel a little thrown together and some
areas of the hotel don't feel particularly inviting, but the ambience is
relaxed and pleasant enough if a little on the impersonal side.
Location
Set on a busy junction in center of Caen a mile from its historical heart
The hotel is
located in the center of Caen at a busy junction overlooking the River L'Orne.
It's not a particularly attractive part of town, and the immediate area can
feel a little rough around the edges. Caen's main train terminal is just a 10-minute walk along the quay while most of the city center can be explored on
foot. The city's historic center featuring the impressive Château de Caen and
the Abbey of Saint-Étienne is a brisk 15-minute walk away, while the vast open
green space of La Prairie is just a few minutes away.
Rooms
Smart, contemporary apartments with well-equipped kitchens but poor beds
The Adagio Caen
Centre has 120 apartments, all of which are decorated in a smart, modern style
with wood veneer floors and furnishings and large black-and-white photos of the
city's historic architecture. Units are air-conditioned and generally spacious with well-equipped
kitchens and nicely-finished bathrooms. Beds, however, are not particularly
high quality and some doubles are two singles pushed together. Other standard
amenities include free wired and wireless Internet, and flat-screen TVs with
satellite channels.
Features
Breakfast, laundry, and fitness rooms
The hotel serves a buffet breakfast each morning in the room just off the lobby -- though
it's generally not included in the rate. There is also a small fitness center
as well as a laundry room with one washer and one dryer. Ample parking is also
available on-site but is not free of charge.
