The three-pearl Mammoth Creek Inn is an intimate, mid-range hotel with local mountain character and the atmosphere of a ski lodge. It's a one-minute walk from the trolley to Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, and a 10-minute free shuttle ride from the airport. The hotel's 25 spacious guest rooms aren't as attractive as rustic common areas, with a look that's a bit dated, but the biggest drawback is that none have AC. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, iHome clock/radios, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Suites and Lofts with kitchens are available. There's a free continental breakfast, fitness center, indoor hot tub, dry sauna, and steam room, but there's no pool or full restaurant on-site. Travels looking for a hotel that's closer to the mountain can consider the Mammoth Mountain Inn.
Scene
Small mid-range hotel with relaxing ski lodge vibe
Mammoth Creek Inn is housed in a two-floor, exterior-corridor motel building, situated on nicely landscaped grounds. There's a picnic table and a communal balcony that offers prime views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Common areas have the charming look of an alpine lodge, and guests can often be found in the handsome lobby on leather sofas in front of the fireplace, or in the second-floor seating area with a wood stove. The hot tub, sauna, and steam room are enticing spots for apres-ski or post-outdoor recreation relaxation, and the hotel also has a billiards room. The family-owned Mammoth Creek draws both couples and families, though it doesn't have a pool like several other area hotels, so in summer it isn't as ideal for those with kids in tow.
Location
One-minute walk from trolley to Mammoth Mountain, a 10-minute drive from the mountain
The Mammoth Creek Inn is on Old Mammoth Road, a one-minute walk from the Stop 7-OMR/Chateau bus and trolley stop. A supermarket, shopping center, and a few restaurants and bars are within a short walk, with a greater concentration of shopping and dining on Main Street, a three-minute drive or just under five minutes by trolley. Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center is roughly a five-minute drive or about 10 minutes by bus from the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center. It's a 10-minute drive or 30-minute trolley ride to Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. Twin Lakes is a popular destination for fishing and boating -- it's a 15-minute drive or 30 minutes by trolley. Yosemite National Park's east entrance (Highway 120) is a 45-minute drive, and the Yosemite Valley floor is about two hours by car. Mammoth Yosemite Airport is a little more than 10 minutes by car.
Rooms
Spacious and clean, some with full kitchens, but dated and no AC
The spacious guest rooms at Mammoth Creek Inn are done in pleasant, warm earth tones, but the overall look is more dated than rustic. No air-conditioning is the main drawback, however, and although the hotel provides fans, rooms can get hot in summer. All come with flat-screen TVs with basic cable, iHome clock/radios, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Junior Suites have living areas and some also feature kitchens with black granite counters, sinks, full refrigerators, ovens with four-burner stovetops, microwaves, toasters, cookware, and tableware. The Lofts offer kitchens, living areas, and access to the hotel's balcony with mountain views. The Deluxe Loft has a sofa bed and the Master Loft Suite features a stone fireplace. Bathrooms have granite countertops and come with hairdryers, bathrobes, and shower/tub combos, and Lofts add a second bathroom.
Features
Free continental breakfast and airport shuttle, but no pool or full restaurant
Guests are generally satisfied with the free breakfast, which features fresh fruit and a wide range of other cold items. The hotel also sets out free coffee, tea, and cookies, available early morning through late evening. There's no full restaurant or swimming pool, but the hotel does offer an indoor hot tub, dry sauna, steam room, and fitness center with free weights, weight machines, cardio machines, and exercise balls. Other amenities include a billiards room with TV, public computer and printer, 24-hour front desk, and free parking that can accommodate large vehicles. Free ski and snowboard storage is available, and the hotel also offers a free round-trip shuttle to Mammoth Yosemite Airport. Guests with limited mobility issues should be aware that the two-floor building doesn't have an elevator. Pets are allowed in select rooms, with two pets (50 pounds or under per pet) permitted in each room for a per-pet, per-night fee.
