Bottom Line

The mid-range Best Western Big Bear Chateau has attractive features and its located within a five-minute drive to Big Bear Village and the ski slopes. The property's opulent, marble lobby makes for an awkward contrast to the hotel's lovely, natural wooded setting, and decor throughout may not suit all travelers' tastes. Its 80 guest rooms are clean and spacious, with coffeemakers, gas fireplaces, and nice marble bathrooms, but Standard rooms don’t include mini-fridges or microwaves. A free hot breakfast buffet is served daily, but the hotel's on-site restaurant isn't open every day. Highlights include a modern fitness center, a seasonal outdoor pool and whirlpool, and free Wi-Fi throughout. Travelers looking to stay closer to the Village can check out The Lodge at Big Bear Lake, a Holiday Inn Resort, which can have lower rates.

Scene

A lavish marble lobby and a lovely natural setting for leisure travelers

Upon entering this hotel set in the woods, guests discover why the word “chateau” is part of the property's name. The lavish lobby is bedecked in crystal chandeliers and marble tile in multiple colors. Decorative vases are scattered throughout and murals behind the reception desk depict pastoral scenes. Traditional furniture provides plenty of places to sit and take it all in. While decor may feel fussy and overdone to some travelers, there are a few attractive antique pieces in the space, including an antique china cabinet that’s filled with vintage cameras. Expect to see the typical Big Bear mix of skiers and other outdoor enthusiasts here, along with wedding parties. The hotel's restaurant -- Tiffany’s Lounge -- is more tasteful, with a colorful, Tiffany glass-inspired dome. It’s a lively place on weekends, when there's live music.

Location

In a peaceful wooded setting, a short drive from the ski slopes and Big Bear Village

The hotel is located in a quiet, wooded setting between Big Bear Village and the ski resorts at Bear Mountain Ski Resort and Snow Summit Ski Resort, all of which are a five-minute drive. Several restaurants and a Walgreen’s pharmacy are within five minutes on foot. The Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain and Big Bear Marina are about a six-minute drive, and the Big Bear Convention Center is five minutes away by car. The Big Bear Trolley also runs throughout the Village, and to the ski areas. Approximate drive times to San Bernardino International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport are one hour and two-and-a-half hours, respectively.

Rooms

Spacious with fireplaces and some have balconies, but microwaves and mini-fridges aren't standard

Guest rooms are decorated in a simple and traditional style, with some tasteful, antique furniture including armoires and marble-top tables. Walls are butter-yellow, carpeting has a green or blue geometric pattern, and white linens are accented by copper bed throws and matching bed skirts. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, but some may find the look a bit fussy. All units have marble gas fireplaces with wood or elaborate plaster mantels, and many also feature small balconies with pleasant views of the pool area or surrounding woods. Standard Doubles include small coffee tables and upholstered chairs, and Junior Suites are exceptionally large, with seating areas that have sofas and love seats. Bathrooms are especially spacious, with wood-and-quartz vanities and shower/tub combos framed by white marble, and some upgraded bathrooms include oversize whirlpool tubs. Standard amenities include free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, free bottled water, and flat-screen TVs. Suites add Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and microwaves. Units are generally quiet, but some minor ambient noise might be heard.

Features

Free breakfast, outdoor pool and whirlpool, and Wi-Fi, but the restaurant isn't open daily

This hotel features the standard Best Western free daily hot breakfast buffet with eggs and breakfast meats, but it also offers additional amenities some properties in the chain don’t include. Tiffany’s Lounge is open Thursday through Saturday, serving cocktails and American fare for dinner, and plus happy hour specials and live music on the weekend. For wellness, the spacious fitness center has a good selection of cardio and strength-training equipment, and there's a seasonal heated outdoor pool and whirlpool set in the woods. The business center has dedicated room with multiple computers and printers, and there's meeting and event space for up to 140 people. Weddings are often held on a grassy lawn that has a gazebo. There's also a game room with a pool table, ping pong, air hockey, and other fun activities. Pets are welcome with a surcharge in eight designated pet-friendly rooms. Wi-Fi is free throughout, as is on-site parking. Guests should note that while the hotel has elevators, access to some second-floor rooms requires climbing a short flight of stairs.
