Located on Cabo Rojo’s beachfront Route 102, Hotel Perichi’s is within walking distance to local restaurants, a grocery store, and the Caribbean Sea (but no swimmable beach). While this two-pearl property has a solid list of amenities -- including a restaurant, a cocktail lounge, and an outdoor pool with a hot tub -- every feature is maintained at a bare, functional level. The result is a hotel that feels dated, including the 49 rooms that offer few amenities and appear to be hanging on by a thread. Expect to see floral-print bedspreads and tube TVs. The comparably priced Parador Combate Beach offers far more modern accommodations, plus direct beach access -- it's a nice step up from what's on offer here.

Puerto Rico's "paradors" (country inns) must meet certain guidelines -- such as being located in a historic place or site of unusual beauty. The 48-room, mid-range Parador Combate Beach meets both requirements. Like most of the country's paradors, Combate Beach is modest, offering basic but tidy rooms, free breakfast, and a pool. Guests also receive a key that allows them access the trails in the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge as well as Combate Beach, a gorgeous stretch of golden sand shaded by dramatic trees and bordered by calm, aquamarine water. The hotel is the best in the area, but those looking for a more upscale resort experience might want to continue driving along the coast to the Copa Marina Beach Resort and Spa or the Hilton Ponce Golf Resort and Casino.

**This hotel was impacted by Hurricane Maria in September 2017. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. **Grand Bahia Ocean View Hotel offers most of the amenities of a traditional beach resort, in a scaled-down, two-and-a-half-pearl package. As of mid-2016, the property is in a state of transition and has clearly changed ownership several times. Decor in the 24 rooms is drab, dowdy, and dated, and while there are more modern rooms, the look still fails to hit the stylish mark. The list of amenities is brief, with flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning being the most notable features. The lack of attractions or services in the immediate area may discourage some travelers, and issues range from surprising fees to general issues with upkeep. While slightly pricier, the three-pearl Parador Combate Beach features more modern decor and a kid-friendly vibe.

**This hotel was impacted by Hurricane Maria in September 2017. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. **Hotel Parador Joyuda Beach promises a solid list of resort amenities and a great beachfront location. It delivers on the latter, with one of the best seaside locations in the area. However, everything about the property -- from the uninviting architecture to the dirty rooms to the dated decor -- is in dire need of updating or repair. While upgraded Beachfront Rooms offer lovely sea views, the only other notable amenities in any of its 41 rooms are tiny flat-screen TVs and old air-conditioners. The hotel is also close to restaurants and bars, and has one of its own as well, with nice water views. Although it lacks direct beach access, the similarly priced Hotel Perichi’s offers the same budget-friendly amenities in a cleaner overall package.
