The Room Mate Carlos (part of the international Room Mate chain) is an upscale, 57-room hotel located among the skyscrapers and European-style buildings of the Buenos Aires Montserrat neighborhood. While the hotel's facade has a classic style, the inside transports guests to an ultra-modern, almost dreamy place: The lobby’s shades of green and quirky design create the feel of an underwater seaweed setting, and the breakfast area's decor is a bold abstract mix of patterns and sunburst light fixtures. Formerly apartments, the rooms are extremely spacious with high ceilings and two levels -- a lounge area, dining section, and small kitchenette on one floor, and sleeping quarters up a short staircase. The lofts are decorated in the same way as the rest of the hotel: clean, futuristic, and full of odd shapes and popping colors. Room Mate Carlos is located to the east of business-oriented Congreso, near government buildings.

Located in the Montserrat neighborhood, about 15 minutes south of downtown
The Montserrat neighborhood in Buenos Aires is situated on the east side of Congreso, an area featuring some of the more important government buildings including City Hall, Casa Rosada, and the Ministry of Defense. Because of this, the hotel does attract a lot of business travelers. Leisure travelers may appreciate the theaters, restaurants, and bars within walking distance to the hotel in the San Telmo neighborhood, however. But both Congreso and San Telmo can be gritty in spots, and particularly dicey at night; this might not be the best area for visitors unfamiliar with the city.
