Bottom Line

The five-pearl Palacio Duhau-Park Hyatt Buenos Aires, an elegant property situated in a 1930s French neoclassical palace, is centrally located in Buenos Aires' upscale Recoleta District. A multi-million-dollar renovation in 2006 updated the palace and added an additional wing to house 142 of the hotel's 165 guest rooms, all while maintaining the hotel's original details and charm. The hotel's impeccably modern rooms include personal bars, marble bathrooms, and butler service, while palace rooms have crystal chandeliers and roll-top tubs. The property has three on-site restaurants, one with a wine and cheese bar and another with a wood-burning fireplace, plus a full-service spa, fitness center, indoor lap pool, art gallery, florist shop, and terraced garden. One of Buenos Aires' pricier hotels, the Palacio Duhau shares the street with the Alvear Palace Hotel, a similar property whose guest rooms have a more traditional palace decor.

Scene

Elegant 1930s French neoclassical palace

In the upscale neighborhood of Recoleta, the Palacio Duhau may be the crown jewel of Buenos Aires' hotel scene. One of the most iconic buildings on the popular Alvear Avenue, the Palacio Duhau rises from the city street like a country estate. Originally built in the 1930s by the the Duhaus family, it's modeled after the Chateau du Marais in regal French neoclassical style. After more than $70 million in investments, the palace reopened in 2006 as a luxury hotel, having preserved most of the palace's original architectural features. The 2006 renovation added a large annex that hosts most of the hotel's guest rooms, while the original palace features opulent common areas and 23 of the hotel's most stylish guest rooms. The new wing can be reached by an underground walkway that also doubles as an art gallery. Throughout the hotel, classic architecture and elegant details meet modern touches that flawlessly combine new with old. In the lobby, a mosaic marble floor meets stone walls featuring carved details and decorative columns, while a lit, recessed ceiling is studded with a beautiful crystal chandelier. Ornately carved wooden doors sit next to minimalist-style white couches that add a chic modern ambience. A library off the lobby offers relaxed sophistication with a rich-wood floor, classic armchairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Details such as textured, leathery end tables, inset bookcases with daily newspapers and artifacts on display create the atmosphere of a private palace.

Rooms

Modern rooms with personal bars, marble bathrooms, and butler service

Most of the Palacio Duhau's 165 rooms are housed in the annex, or new wing, which is connected to the main palace by an underground walkway. Standard Rooms, located in the new wing, measure 355 to 430 square feet and  have simple, contemporary decor with light-wood floors and accent walls, modern gray rugs, matching woven headboards, and dark-wood furniture. Impeccably clean, these rooms include modern white armchairs, curved dark-wood work desks with leathery brown armless chairs. Wardrobes hold laptop safes, while a fully stocked personal bar includes a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, plus coffee- and tea-making facilities. Rooms include 30-inch flat-screen TVs with cable, DVD players with DVDs on-demand, dual-line telephones, free morning newspapers, and free Wi-Fi. In-room AC and heat are individually controlled. Marble bathrooms include separate toilet and bidet areas, and separate bathtubs and walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads. They include scales, hairdryers, loofas, robes, and Celedonio Lohidoy toiletries. The main palace building houses 11 rooms and 12 suites, which integrate more classic details into the modern decor. Rooms in the palace itself might have crystal chandeliers and roll top tubs, and suites have working fireplaces. All rooms include butler service.

Features

Luxurious spa, lap pool, three restaurants, terraced garden, and attentive service

The Palacio Duhau hotel has all the features expected of a five-pearl property, all executed with impeccable style and attention to detail. An elegant marble spa has five treatment rooms in a addition to an 82-foot indoor heated lap pool. There are separate saunas and hot tubs for men and women, though these areas are small. The adjacent fitness center is stylish and well-lit, with a large range of modern weight and cardio machines with individual screens. The workout room also has a full rack of dumbbells in addition to medicine balls, kettle bells, yoga mats, and other extras. Even the fitness area's changing rooms are something to speak of, with slatted-wood floors and square sinks. The hotel has three restaurants and a bar. The Duhau Restaurante & Vinoteca includes a wine and cheese bar, and serves traditional Argentine fare with more than 7,000 bottles of Argentine wine. The Gioia Restaurante & Terrazas focuses on Italian food, while the Los Salones del Piano Nobile serves light snacks and afternoon tea. The Oak Bar is a standout, with oak floors and ceiling beams, wingback chairs, and a wood-buring fireplace evoking old-club charm. Breakfast is available for an extra fee.The hotel also has a floral boutique, an art gallery with rotating exhibitions, and an impeccably manicured terraced garden. There is a 24-hour business center with four computers and full-office services, including printing, copying, faxing, laminating, and shipping. The hotel offers butler service in all rooms, 24-hour room service, and free shoe shine and ironing service for up to two garments, as well as same-day laundry or dry cleaning service. Babysitting or car/limo service can also be arranged. The staff is multilingual, and guests rave about the service -- "If you want it, they can get it" seems to be the motto here. (The on-site concierge once set up a day trip to Antartica for a guest who wanted to see penguins.)
