The 77-room Petnehazy Club Hotel is set in the lush outskirts of Buda, the western side of Budapest behind a backdrop of mountains. The mid-range hotel offers 32 Studios with kitchenettes and balconies as well as 45 Cottages that offer kitchens, saunas, and patios. Numerous amenities include horseback riding and hiking in the area, multiple saunas and pools, a restaurant, and lots of kid-friendly amenities, including a playground. Despite its seemingly quiet location, the hotel is a popular wedding destination and festivities can be loud. The Danubius Health Spa Resort Margitsziget, on Margaret Island, offers a quieter vacation in green surrounds, and it's right in the center of the city.
Scene
Comfy family-friendly lodge hotel in a rural setting
The Petnehazy Club Hotel offers an alternative Budapest vacation outside of the city on a mountainside that’s shaded by pine forests. The pitched roof lodge entrance feels like a Swiss alpine cabin and features a small porch with friendly roaming cats and the resident husky named Akka. The hotel's terraces open in the warmer months and have casual patio furniture and views of the mountains. The reception area features pinewood walls, exposed ceiling beams with triangular skylights, comfy leather sofas, and a flat-screen TV. There’s a lovely spiral wooden staircase, but no elevator. Cottages are spread throughout the property and are connected by pathways. The quiet, scenic atmosphere makes the hotel a popular wedding destination, and some guests complain about the late night festivities. It's a good choice with families, and has both a kids' pool and a playground.
Location
Tucked in Budapest’s countryside, a 20- to 25-minute drive into town
Located on the outskirts of Budapest, the hotel is in a quiet area a short walk to the Petnehazy Golf Club, but be warned that the suburban streets are dark at night. The area feels rural, and there’s hiking and horseback riding nearby. It’s 10 minutes on foot to the bus stop of lines 63 and 96, which is located right in front of a market. Buda Castle, Matthias Church, and Gellert Thermal Bath -- all on the same side of the Danube as the hotel -- take about 20 minutes to reach by car. A shuttle, for a fee, goes to central Budapest in 25 minutes or to the nearby Mammut shopping center in 15 minutes. The drive time to the Budapest Airport is around 45 minutes.
Rooms
Pinewood Studios with country decor and safes and Cottages with kitchens and saunas
Studios and one-, two- and three-bedroom Cottages are available. All rooms have safes and tube-style TVs. Studios have parquet floors, traditional pinewood furniture (including writing desks), balconies and kitchens with double-burner stovetops, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and microwaves. Log Cottages offer sitting rooms with sofa beds, dining tables, terraces with scenic views and fully equipped kitchens. Basic bathrooms have shower/tub combos and heaters and those in Cottages come with saunas and hairdryers (hairdryers are also available in Studios on request). There are four accessible rooms in the hotel and pet-friendly rooms are available for an additional charge.
Features
Country restaurant, event rooms, business corner, multiple pools, saunas, parking, and area shuttle
The hotel’s restaurant, Dunyha, has a country vibe, with exposed wooden beams, windows facing the mountains, wooden chairs, high chairs for babies, and a children’s play area with toys. Breakfast is included in room rates and there's also a bar in the lobby with wooden stools. There are six meeting/event rooms that can fit up to 250 people, and wedding services are available as it's a popular spot for local weddings. There's a business corner in the lobby with a single PC and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel (though it's reportedly spotty in some of the Cabins). The heated indoor pool is surrounded by a white-tiled deck with casual lounge chairs and windows. There are also two saunas. The outdoor pool -- offering children’s swimming lessons -- has an island, a bridge, a kids' pool, and a deck with a shower and lounge chairs. The lawn features a log playground and picnic tables. A barbecue area offers a grill and stone oven. The hotel also provides four all-season tennis courts and on-site bike rentals and there are nearby horseback riding and hiking trails. Parking is free and a shuttle service to Moszkva Square, the airport, and the city center is available for a fee.
