It's easy to get a room with a view at the upscale Budapest Marriot Hotel. The property is on the riverfront, and all of it 264 rooms have balconies with views of the Danube and many
of the city’s landmark buildings. It may be worth paying a little extra -- the
equivalent of the cost of breakfast here -- for rooms with access to the
24-hour Executive Lounge, which offers free breakfast, and drinks
and snacks. Be aware that in-room Wi-Fi comes with a fee, rooms lack minibars or mini-fridges, and there's no spa or pool. For an upscale hotel with a pool, travelers could try the Continental Hotel Zara Budapest.
Scene
A large property with a chain hotel vibe
Occupying an unattractive 10-story
structure of concrete and glass, the Budapest Marriott Hotel sits on a picturesque street of pretty
historic buildings. The long, white marble lobby, lined with
wood-paneled walls and counters on one side, seems austere. The adjacent Lobby
Cafe, though, is more cheerful and welcoming, with a rich-patterned carpet and bright-colored
sofas and armchairs arranged around tables.
But the vibe is that of a large, generic chain hotel, not only in the public areas but also in the rooms, which are large but lack distinctive character, although the black-and-white bathrooms are spiffy. The hotel draws couples, business travelers, and families too. It's a popular overnight stop for major cruise lines, which can cause congestion in the hotel's public areas.
Location
Exceptional riverside location in the city center
Situated in the city center, many tourist sights
are within walking distance of the Budapest Marriott Hotel, or are easy to get to by public transport. A tram service runs just past the hotel, and
Ferenciek tere metro station is about an eight-minute walk. Váci utca, the
main shopping street, is seven minutes away on foot, and is home not only to
popular chain stores but also to many restaurants, cafes, and bars. By public transportation, the Hungarian State Opera is nine minutes away, and the famed Széchenyi Thermal Bath is about 18 minutes. The train
station is a 15-minute bus ride away, and Budapest Airport is about a 30-minute drive, depending on traffic.
Rooms
Comfortable rooms with scenic river views from the balcony
The 264 air-conditioned rooms and suites have spectacular views
of the Danube River, and major city landmarks such as Buda Castle, the Szechenyi
Chain Bridge, and the Citadel from their balconies. Rooms are spacious and
bright, thanks to their large picture windows. But the decor is standard
chain-hotel: Functional dark-wood furniture, off-white walls, striped
curtains, and beige-and-brown patterned carpets. Bathrooms, which come with basic toiletries, have a spiffier feel, with white tiles and black countertops. All rooms include flat-screen TVs, irons and ironing boards, an electric kettle for tea and
coffee, and a few high-priced drinks and snacks but no minibars or mini-fridges. In-room
Wi-Fi is free only for Marriott Rewards cardholders.
