Bottom Line

Hotel Saint Nicholas is a standard mid-range chain hotel within walking distance of several of Brussels' major sights. Its 60 rooms are clean and modern, with a minimal brown-dominated decor and flat-screen TVs, but no air-conditioning. Amenities are limited and include a breakfast buffet (for a fee), but no parking, gym, restaurant, or bar. Prices are decent for a central hotel, though travelers might want to compare rates with the Bedford Hotel & Congress Centre, which has an on-site restaurant, gym, bar, meeting rooms, and rooms with mini-fridges.

Scene

Contemporary, basic hotel under renovation as of 2016

The Hotel Saint Nicholas is located on a bustling brick street in the center of Brussels, making it a convenient place to stay for tourists and business travelers alike. Renovations of the public areas -- including the lobby, hallways, and the breakfast room -- began in 2015 and are expected to be completed by the end of 2016. Though most of the rooms and public spaces are found in the main building, there are some apartments and family rooms located in a building across the street. Take note that though the updated spaces will provide a fresh look, this will remain a basic hotel with few amenities.

Location

Centrally located in Brussels, near attractions, entertainment, and public transportation

Hotel Saint Nicolas is located on a busy street in central Brussels. Shops and restaurants abound on neighboring streets, while many attractions are within walking distance. There's also a casino next door to the hotel. The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is a nine-minute walk away, while the Manneken Pis statue takes seven minutes to reach on foot. It’s a three-minute walk to Grand Place, the city's central square. There's a metro station a four-minute walk away and a bus and tram a two-minute walk from the hotel. It’s a 26-minute drive to Brussels Airport.

Rooms

Simple, modern rooms with flat-screen TVs and apartments with kitchenettes

The hotel has 60 guest rooms from Single Rooms to Family Apartments. Rooms were renovated in 2014 and have contemporary, but minimal, decor. Wooden floors, golden walls, dark-brown beds with off-white padded headboards, hanging reading lights, flat-screen TVs, and chocolate-brown curtains are found in all rooms. But there's little else to add much personality or warmth to the spaces -- no artwork or decorative objects. Rooms are not air-conditioned and lack coffee- and tea-making facilities, though Studios and Family Apartments are equipped with kitchenettes with stoves, microwaves, sinks, coffeemakers, and fridges. Brown-tiled bathrooms have walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and toiletries in dispensers. Note that there have been complaints about thin walls and bothersome noise from the pub across the street into the early morning hours.

Features

Basic breakfast buffet (for a fee) and free Wi-Fi

Hotel Saint Nicolas has few extra property features other than a basic breakfast buffet for a fee. There isn’t a full restaurant, bar, gym, or business center, but Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. On-site parking isn’t available either, but there are nearby parking lots.
