Bottom Line

The 37-room Hotel Jan Brito is an upscale hotel with elegant decor set in a beautifully renovated 16th-century building. Outside, there is a charming garden with gravel paths and an impressive stone fountain. Free breakfast is served in a
sophisticated dining room and there’s a small bar on-site in a pretty parlor.
The hotel is in a quiet location within walking distance to the center of town,
but there’s no parking (unlike at the Hotel Heritage). The rooms are elegant and classic, with minibars and free Wi-Fi. Guests may also want to consider the similarly priced Huis Koning, a charming, sought-after B&B next to a private canal.

Scene

Sixteenth-century hotel with rich, classic decor and charming garden

In a beautiful, storybook
building with brick walls, tall windows, and three peaked roofs, Hotel Jan
Brito is a charming boutique. Colorful Renaissance paintings, fireplaces, wooden
staircases, and chandeliers will transport guests back to the 16th
century. Common rooms have a wonderful use of color: Breakfast is served in an
elegant room with pale green curtains and wooden chairs with pale green fabric,
and the bar is in a parlor with lavender curtains and plush, lavender chairs. Outside,
the garden area is lovely. Gravel paths lead to a central stone fountain with
seahorse features, and a glass elevator is a modern touch that lets guests enjoy
the outside scenery. The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed.

Location

Residential area within walking distance to shops, cafes, and restaurants

The hotel is on a
residential street which is quieter than the touristy areas in Bruges. There
are plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants nearby. There is also an outdoor
market within a short walk, and the historic center of Dijver, a destination
popular for its famous medieval buildings near the canal, is less than a
10-minute walk. The international airport in Ostend is less than a 30-minute
drive.

Rooms

Elegant rooms with modern conveniences

Rooms are elegant with
classic furnishings like rich floor-to-ceiling curtains and heavy wooden headboards
and dressers. The patterned wallpaper in some rooms can be interpreted as either pretty and soft, or a touch overwhelming. Modern
conveniences include minibars, free Wi-Fi, and wall-mounted flat-screen TVs (many of these are tiny). Some
rooms have spacious bathrooms with separate stall showers and tubs, and the Garden Suite has its own outdoor seating area on a patio. Though they're plenty charming and have lots of historical appeal, they're not quite as upscale as the rooms at Hotel Heritage -- but then, they're also usually a bit cheaper.

Features

Beautiful garden, free breakfast, and small bar

The hotel has a secluded outdoor
garden, which is a rarity in Bruges. A free breakfast is served in a pretty room
and includes cold cuts, cheeses, and breads. There’s a small bar in a parlor
serving coffee, cocktails, and beer. A computer is available in the lobby for
guests to use, and umbrellas are provided for guests to borrow.
