Die Swaene

Situated along a canal in the city center, Hotel Die Swaene has a lovely white exterior with charming black wrought-iron Juliet balconies adorning the windows. The hotel's interiors feature romantic, classic decor that's influenced by the historic nature of the property -- the building dates back to the 14th-century, with some parts, such as the lounge, created in the 18th-century. Original ceiling paintings and paneling still remain in the lounge and are historically protected. Old World details abound, like stone busts and religious statues that are found throughout. The lobby has stone floors covered in printed rugs, while chic velour couches and armchairs in bold yellow, orange, and green hues provide seating. The Guildhall Lounge is a grand, high-ceilinged space with a beautiful chandelier, lovely antique tapestries on the walls, a charming fireplace, and gilded decorative pieces like clocks, mirrors, and gorgeous ceiling molding. Antique couches and chairs are upholstered in striped fabric sporting a white, gold, and pink color palette, while large French windows fill the space with light. Though most of the spaces are lovely, the elevator and hallways could use an update, including new carpets and touch ups here and there. Nonetheless, it's a decidedly romantic atmosphere at this charming and intimate boutique property, and it's no surprise that couples are the main clientele here.

The hotel occupies a prime location along a charming canal in the city center, offering both lovely views as well as easy access to popular attractions. Both the Markt and Belfry Tower take five minutes to reach on foot, while the Church of Our Lady is a seven-minute walk away. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops on surrounding streets, while the nearest bus stop is a two-minute walk from the property. The main train station is an eight-minute drive or 16-minute bus ride, or guests can reach it on foot in 20 minutes. It’s a 35-minute drive to the Ostend-Bruges International Airport, or an hour by public transportation.

The rooms at Die Swaene are individually designed, but all feature classic decor -- some more opulent than others -- and a romantic vibe, plus some offer lovely canal views. Ornate headboards, gilt-framed mirrors, and patterned wallpaper are common features found in many rooms. Others have varying color palettes, velour headboards, and lavish curtains framing beds -- which may feel a bit overdone for some. Some rooms have antique wooden furniture, often adorned with silver or gold detailing. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, safes, air-conditioning, and minibars, but lack coffee- and tea-making facilities. Bathrooms vary -- some are sleek and modern, with white tiles and black counters, but others have outdated brown and yellow tiles, marble sinks, and old-fashioned hairdryers. Shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and toiletries are provided in all rooms.

As is typical at small boutique properties, features at the Die Swaene are limited. There’s a lovely indoor pool and sauna -- though some guests have reported that they are shut down on occasion. The hotel offers an extensive breakfast buffet (for an additional charge) that includes hot and cold items like mozzarella cheese and tomatoes, high quality meats and cheeses, and cooked-to-order eggs. There’s also a small bar area in the breakfast room, where guests can grab a drink to sip in the romantic lounge that doubles as a meeting room. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, though some past guests have complained of problems with the connection. On-site parking incurs a daily fee.
