Bottom Line

Hosting three boutique rooms with 18th-century style rooms, the Le Clos Chateldon is a three-pearl bed-and-breakfast, located in the charming Breton town of Antrain. While there is plenty of quaint scenery and local flavor in Antrain, a car is necessary to access most major sights throughout Brittany. Each room is tastefully decorated with an antique sensibility, with features like bespoke wallpaper, half canopy beds, period armchairs, and plenty of romantic wall art, though the Red Room lacks an en-suite bathroom. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and a free breakfast with homemade items is served daily. Free parking is available on-site.

Scene

A romantic 18th-century mansion with inviting charm

A well-preserved mansion from the 18th century, Le Clos Chateldon draws couples looking for a romantic retreat, including those staying here after getting hitched at the village's local chapel, or nearby 13th century medieval castle, the Chateau de Combourg. The hotel's stone facade is decorated with cobalt blue window shutters and hanging flower pots. Guests are greeted by an immaculately decorated entrance way, with ornate wallpaper and wooden picture rails. An arched doorway leads to a generously sized private garden, with ample outdoor seating. The hotel's Green Lounge is a character-filled guest retreat complete with a library, open fireplace, and chessboard. The breakfast room is decorated in the style of Louis XV, with gold framed portraits, an antique grandfather clock, and an intricate ceiling rose. The hotel is full of tasteful knick-knacks that create a homey, inviting atmosphere.

Location

In charming Antrain, easy drives to major Brittany sights

One of Brittany's many quaint and traditional towns, Antrain sits in the midst of gorgeous French countryside. The town itself is completely walkable from the hotel, but this vast area of France is best explored by car. The nearest train station, Pontorson-Mont Saint-Michel Railway Station, is a 25-minute drive, and guests arriving by air at Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport are a 44-minute drive to the hotel. For gourmet groceries, the hotel is an eight-minute walk to Josera France, and guests are a 25-minute drive to Mont Saint-Michel Beach and the Chemins De La Baie du Mont Saint-Michel, a 16th-century abbey. For natural beauty, the Foret De Vill Cartier Forest is an 11-minute drive from the hotel, and the Etang De Boulet Lake is a 26-minute drive from the hotel. The village of Cancale is locally famous for its oysters and is a 45-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Boutique accommodation with thoughtfully themed decor

There are three bespoke guest rooms available at this bed-and-breakfast; the Blue and Red Room are decorated in an 18th French century style, with ornate wallpaper, stained glass windows, ceiling roses, antique furniture, and half canopy beds. In contrast, the third room, The Venice Suite, is decorated in a Venetian style, with neutrally toned striped walls, hand-painted antique furniture, and Venetian carnival masks hung around the room. There are wood floors throughout all rooms and wall art has a rich, luxurious character, though the style here may be a bit too frilly for some guests. Rooms are all utterly charming and romantic, and include free Wi-Fi, French sweets, flat-screen TVs, and coffee- and tea-making facilities. All bathrooms are pristine and bespoke, with high-end toiletries, and a mixture of stand-up showers or shower/tub combos. The Red Room does not have it's own en-suite bathroom.

Features

A homemade breakfast and a private landscaped garden

One of the highlights of staying here is the breakfast, which features an array of homemade items that guests love and includes fresh bread and pastries, fruit of the season, jams, and fresh juice. When the weather cooperates, it can be taken in the lovely landscaped gardens. The Green Room is a handsome lounge decorated with antique furniture and features a chess board and fireplace, for guests looking to spend a bit of time outside of their own rooms. There is free on-site parking and free Wi-Fi throughout.
