Bottom Line

The 200-room Promenade Angra dos Reis is a three-pearl resort situated on the coast outside the city of Angra dos Reis. The drive into the center of town takes about 20 minutes, but most guests are here to enjoy the water and surrounding landscapes. The resort sits on a sprawling property, with the huge pool complex as its dominant feature. Rooms are basic, and come with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and safes. Families are drawn here because of the many attractions for kids, including a kids' club, playground, and indoor and outdoor activities. Unfortunately, dining and drinks are pricey and underwhelming, and rooms are tired. Travelers looking for lower rates in the area could check out the similar Golden Tulip Angra dos Reis, which add-s a small spa.

Scene

Sprawling resort with prime seaside setting that draws Brazilian families

This family-friendly hotel is situated on sprawling grounds right along the beach -- albeit a beach that's not exactly the prettiest to be found in the Angra dos Reis region. It's a fairly typical family holiday resort that has lots of action in the form of features and activities, though the style is a little plain and basic. Most of the focus here is on the outdoors, and the grounds are certainly pretty. Walkways to guest rooms are lined with fountains and tropical vegetation. There are lots of places around the property where guests can relax or participate in activities, though the pool complex is the most popular spot on-site. With its kids' club, outdoor playground, and indoor game room, this place mostly draws families, but groups and some couples stay here as well. The resort is most popular with domestic Brazilian travelers.

Location

Seaside location about a 20-minute drive outside city of Angra dos Reis

This hotel is situated inside the oceanfront Costa Bella condominium community, outside the city of Angra dos Reis. The area is known for its beaches, islands, and gorgeous landscapes. The hotel sits on more than 20 acres, with preserved zones to protect the Atlantic rainforest. There is a beach on-site, but it has the feel of an estuary and isn't the tropically dazzling kind you'll find throughout the region. Driving into the center of town takes about 20 minutes. Jair Carneiro Toscano de Brito soccer stadium is about a 15-minute drive from the hotel. The hotel has a marina, so it's convenient for guests to take boat outings. A popular day trip is to Ilha Grande, which has beautiful beaches and protected rainforests. The drive to the airport in Rio de Janeiro takes about two and a half hours.

Rooms

Attractive rooms with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and balconies or terraces

Rooms are offered as Superior, Luxury, or two-bedroom Duplexes, which are split into two levels. Some rooms have sofa-sleepers for seating and additional sleeping space. Decor is pleasant enough, but simple, with white tile floors, sea-foam green accent walls, medium-toned, clean-lined wood furniture, and tropical-patterned bed runners. Some of the furniture and seating was looking a bit tired during our visit. Amenities in all rooms include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, mini-fridges, desks, safes, and free Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi connection can be spotty. All rooms have balconies or terraces, with views of the pool or the garden. Outdoor furniture consists of two small chairs and a table. Bathrooms are compact, but they include granite countertops, showers, separate tubs, hairdryers, magnifying mirrors, and toiletries. A bit of upkeep might be needed as they're looking a little worn.

Features

Restaurant, two bars, free breakfast, huge pool, tennis and basketball courts, plus kids' club and playground

This resort offers most everything needed for a leisure stay except a spa. However, there are some hits and misses here. Guests can start their day with a free breakfast buffet served in the Zum Cafe. Breakfast selections include cold meats, cheeses, breads, fruits, pastries, and hot items. The restaurant also serves Brazilian and international fare for lunch and dinner. The beer bar has rattan seating as well as cozy booths and bar stools. Another bar serves guests at the pool. Unfortunately, food and drink can be pricey and the quality is often underwhelming, according to previous guests. Half- and full-board plans are available.A highlight at the hotel is the large, winding free-form outdoor pool, with numerous palm trees setting a tropical scene. Cushioned lounge chairs shaded by umbrellas are available for poolside relaxation, and guests can swim up to the bar for a drink. A bridge crosses from one section to another, and shallow areas suit sunbathers and children. Hammocks hanging from palm trees on the grassy lawn by the beach provide another place where guests can kick back. The beach behind the hotel isn't the most beautiful in the area, but it's private and lined with palm trees. The marina has berths for 300 boats, and guests can take boat trips to nearby islands. The open fitness center features basic cardio and weight-training equipment, some free weights, and open space for aerobics or yoga. There's also a sauna. A colorful indoor game room includes foosball, table tennis, and billiards, and outdoor activities like basketball and tennis are available. The younger kids have a climbing set, bouncy balls, and toys indoors, and a playground and sand pit outside. The events space can accommodate up to 300 people, and on-site parking is free. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, though it can be spotty.
