Bottom Line

The 15-room ModeVie Boutique Hotel is a mid-range property in downtown Gramado that offers a chic alternative to the chalet-style hotels in the area. Swapping Bavarian decor for clean, modern touches, this adults-only property is streamlined but still romantic. There's a delicious free breakfast served until early afternoon -- a bonus for late sleepers -- and a stylish, small bar off the lobby, plus an attached wine and cheese shop. Rooms include lots of tech toys such as large flat-screen TVs, iPads, and major sound systems; some rooms also have whirlpool tubs and balconies. While there is no gym or pool, there is a small, no-frills spa. Parking is street only, but bicycles are available for guest use, and most everything is walkable from this charming downtown hotel. Those looking for a family-friendly option could try the Hotel Ritta Höppner.

Scene

Casual, chic boutique property with a romantic vibe

Though the slate-blue exterior of the mid-range ModeVie Boutique Hotel fits in with the general style of architecture in Gramado, once inside, this hotel is every inch a trendy and modern property, which makes it stand out amongst the more prevalent historic or European-influenced hotels in the area. The lobby is small but stylish and sets the tone for the modern, streamlined look found throughout the rest of the hotel. The uncluttered, attractive space has sleek white couches, black floors, modern art, artsy desks and tables, and free-standing velvet-covered chairs. The general vibe here is adult, classy, and chic; children under 12 are not allowed, which helps to keep the property peaceful and the vibe romantic. The staff are attentive and aim to please, excelling at offering personal attention to all guests.

Location

Conveniently located right in downtown Gramado

Situated right in the heart of Gramado, the ModeVie Boutique Hotel is located on a little side street convenient to all the shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes of downtown. Though there's no parking, guests with cars will find that leaving them on the street is generally safe; however, most attractions are within walking distance, such as the Mini Mundo theme park, 15-minutes away on foot. Black Lake Park (Parque do Lago Negro) is a longer trek -- a 30-minute walk or eight-minute drive away.

Rooms

Contemporary and stylish rooms with modern amenities

There are only 15 rooms in this chic boutique and all are stylish. Decor is modern, with minimal, clean lines and neutral colors plus an occasional piece of contemporary art. Room size varies from snug, smallish rooms to a duplex configuration with a whirlpool tub, covered balcony, and living space. One highlight of the rooms is their top-shelf tech. Guests will find large flat-screen TVs, iPads, surround-sound audio systems, and free Wi-Fi in their room. Stocked minibars and climate controls also add to guests' comfort. Contemporary bathrooms have upscale fixtures and are sparkling clean; some are showers-only while others have whirlpool tubs plus walk-in showers. Upscale toiletries and robes and slippers add to the luxury feel. Beds have high quality mattresses, linens, and pillows. One extra special touch is turndown service at night, which includes tea and cakes. Light sleepers should note that some rooms can experience a little bit of noise due to the downtown location.

Features

Free breakfast, room service, a stylish bar, wine and cheese shop, a spa, and loaner bicycles

Similar to most hotels in Gramado, this hotel serves a free breakfast to guests daily; late risers will appreciate that it stays open until afternoon. The breakfast room has terrific city views and lots of light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows and an atrium area with a glass roof. The decor is simple but appealing with dark wood shelving units, artistic mirrors, a breakfast bar area, and bright contrasting flowers. The breakfast menu offers a terrific selection and will even cater to guests with special needs such as those requiring gluten-free items. While there isn't a hotel restaurant on-site, the gourmet Rodolfo Meyer restaurant is directly adjacent to the ModeVie, and it offers up a different sophisticated menu every day prepared with fresh ingredients. Note, it's only open for dinner Thursday through Sunday. Room service is also available with limited hours. Just to the side of the lobby is the inviting and mod on-site bar, Bar le Temps, which is also popular with guests and serves a full variety of libations. The Oenotheque wine and cheese shop is another a highlight; it offers not only a large selection of wines, but also cheeses, salamis, and other gourmet deli items. It's open daily. There's also a small spa; it's rather functional in appearance, but relaxing services can be booked in the space including massages, facials, and hydrotherapy. While there's no swimming pool or fitness center, free bicycles are available for guests wishing to get a little exercise and see the town on two wheels. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
