Resembling a Swiss manor relocated to Brazil, this 40-room, mid-range hotel offers very simple rooms with few amenities, and it's a good option for those traveling along the scenic drive that passes through Gramado. Situated about a 10-minute walk from downtown, the hotel has two on-site restaurants and is also near other dining options and shops. The rooms themselves are no-frills, with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free -- although sporadic -- Wi-Fi. Some rooms have balconies and there is an outside garden area, as well. There isn't much here in the way of amenities, but the quaint architecture and convenient location make this a popular Gramado stopover.
Scene
Casually romantic with a European feel
Many travelers are unaware of the heavy German influence in Brazil, and nowhere is this more evident than in places like the Hotel Sky. The exterior architecture of this hotel could literally leave one thinking they somehow took a wrong turn and ended up in Europe. With a beige and brown Tudor sort of look and red brick spires pointing to the sky, the property has a Bavarian feel that is heightened by charming flowerpots on the balconies. The furnishings in the lobby are dated, but somehow feel delightful in a throwback kind of way. Leather and wood couches and armchairs surround a cozy fireplace that's decorated with everything from religious statuettes to wagon models. Hot water is always available for coffee and tea, and the old-school check-in desk is solid wood. The fondue restaurant, Chateau Allemand, almost feels rustic with its wooden ceilings, walls, and furnishings, but billowy, sheer-white curtains and chandelier-style light fixtures add elegance to the space. In general this property doesn't feel particularly luxurious, but it's comfortable and the overall vibe is relaxed, romantic, and casual. There are a lot of mature couples staying here, but it's also family-friendly.
Location
Situated in a quiet residential area just outside of downtown Gramado
Located in Gramado -- one of the towns along the scenic drive known as Rota Romantica (Romantic Route) -- the Hotel Sky is conveniently located in a quiet residential area about a 10-minute walk from the center of downtown. There are some shops and restaurants in the immediate vicinity, and the area feels quiet and rural, though the road into town is busy. It is also a 10-minute walk to the nearby attractions of Gramado Porch and the Mini Mundo (a miniature village). Museu Gramado is a seven-minute drive, as well. The Caxias do Sul Airport is an hour and 15 minutes away by car.
Rooms
Simple, clean rooms with dated decor and modern amenities
The rooms at the Hotel Sky are a little on the small side and nothing special decor-wise, but they are clean and well kept. Floral window treatments, inexpensive bed coverlets, and tiled floors feel dated. The furnishings are generally made of inexpensive pine wood, but the sunny yellow walls and good-size windows (that open for fresh air) make the spaces feel cheerier. The beds range in size depending on room type, and they are comfy enough with very basic linens. The towels are also not of high quality, but they are in good shape and imprinted with the Hotel Sky logo; the towel art left on the beds after housekeeping has swept through is a nice touch. Bathrooms here are also pretty standard issue and have showers only (no tubs), but do have decent hot water and pressure; wall-mounted hairdryers are also included. As far as modern amenities go, there are flat-screen TVs with minimal channels, stocked minibars -- though most of the items are non-alcoholic and none are free -- and free Wi-Fi -- though regrettably the in-room signal is pretty terrible. Some rooms have balconies and a few have views; the quietest rooms are toward the back of the buildings.
Features
Free breakfast buffet, two on-site restaurants, room service, a lounge with computers, and free parking
This hotel does not have a lot of extra amenities (i.e. no spa, gym, business center), but it does have a fantastic free breakfast with at least 80 different hot and cold food items, many reflecting the traditional cuisine of the area. This buffet is a highlight for most guests. Also on-site are two restaurants: The Chateau Allemand is a very popular fondue place, sometimes hosting live music in the evenings. And the Casa de Sopas is basically a soup bar that also offers salads and other light bites. It's more casual than the Chateau Allemand, but a good and inexpensive option right on the premises. Room service is available, as well. There is an Internet lounge area where two computers are available for guest use. Since the Wi-Fi signal tends to be spotty and inconsistent in most of the rooms, many guests may choose to check their emails through the direct connection here. Common areas are not plentiful but there are laundry facilities, as well as a garden for guests to enjoy. A game room is also apparently in the works (though not built yet). Parking is free and though spaces are limited, valet is included. The front desk can arrange for airport pickups and rental cars.
