The 60-room budget Chautauqua Cottages is located in a heavily wooded area, next to Boulder Mountain Park. Built in 1925, it is a compound of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom cabins. The property feels like a retro summer camp for adults,
without televisions or phones (but there's free Wi-Fi). The site is ripe with history,
and the cottages and public areas are filled with atmosphere, old photographs,
and history books. Every cottage is different, but all have full kitchens,
large furnished screened-in porches, and beautiful views -- but don't expect modern furniture or luxe linens.
Scene
Compound of cottages with retro summer camp feel
The Chautauqua Cottages feel like a cross between a grown-up
summer camp and a miner's village, with an adorable white clapboard General
Store that serves homemade ice cream, espresso and chai, and pastries,
alongside racks of t-shirts, baseball caps, souvenirs, and sundries. The
porch is a lovely place to sit on benches and people watch. The lobby, called Academic Hall, is designed with old-fashioned
touches, including a bank of old metal mailboxes, a repurposed church pew, and
plenty of sepia photographs. Management uses chalkboards to keep track of
arrivals and departures.
Location
At the edge of Boulder Mountain Park, near the University of Boulder, with spectacular hiking trails
Located next to Boulder Mountain Park, these cottages are at the foot of the Flatiron Mountains, with forty acres of hiking trails right outside the front door. There is a golf course within two miles of the property, and the
University of Boulder is a mile away. A five-minute drive brings guests to
downtown Boulder. During the summer, there is a local concert series, and the
property runs free shuttles to the various music venues.
Rooms
Individually decorated cottages, with screened porches and full kitchens
No two Chautauqua Cottages are alike. Some are furnished in Arts
and Crafts style, some Mission. Some have clawfoot tubs, while others have fireplaces. There
are studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom cabins, all with living rooms,
full-size kitchens, and large, furnished screened-in porches. Bedrooms are
small, but bright and cozy. None of the buildings have televisions or phones;
guests are meant to unplug. Each cottage has one
free-standing air-conditioning unit and several ceiling fans. Housekeeping and
fresh linens are available upon request. The property follows sustainable
practices, including composting; guests should read the manual for clarity.
Features
HIking, tennis, basketball, barbecue facilities, and grocery delivery
The Chautauqua Cottages are a hiker and mountain biker’s paradise,
with miles of trails right outside the front door. There is concierge, grocery, and beverage service for guests who want to stock their kitchens before or
after arrival. There are barbecue facilities around the property for outdoor
cooking, and laundry for clean-up. On-site basketball and tennis courts are available
for guest use, as well as a lending library for quieter moments. The Dining
Hall and General Store offer good food and a relaxed gathering place, and, in
summer months, the property runs shuttle buses to local events.
