The Inn at Longwood Medical, a mid-range property with 155 clean and spacious rooms, offers a convenient location but is in desperate need of an update. Bathrooms have been renovated, but the rest of the decor is stuck in the late '80s. Located within a five-minute walk of thee major hospitals, including the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children's Hospital, the hotel is also near the walking paths of the Back Bay Fens, and is within a 15-minute walk of Fenway Park, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Travelers might want to also check out the Verb Hotel, which is in the same general area as the Inn at Longwood and has similar rates but more modern decor.
Scene
Clean and convenient but outdated hotel
The Inn at Longwood Medical is clean and conveniently located, but it's in desperate need of an update -- decor, from the furniture and carpets to the artwork and wallpaper, is stuck in the late '80s/early '90s, and is like a time capsule from that period. The style is reminiscent of Holiday Inn before rebranding, and that unintentional retro look continues in the attached Galleria food court with its Technicolor tables and Pop Art.
Location
Convenient location near Boston's top medical centers and universities
The Inn at Longwood Medical is within walking distance of several of the city's renowned medical treatment centers, including Boston Children’s Hospital (two minutes away), the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (two minutes), and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (three minutes). Northeastern University is a five-minute drive or a 17-minute walk from the hotel, and Boston University is a seven-minute drive or a 20-minute walk away. Fenway Park is either a five-minute drive or a 15 minute walk, as is the Museum of Fine Arts. Symphony Hall is a nine-minute drive. Logan International Airport is a 16-minute drive without traffic; otherwise, allow at least a half-hour.
Rooms
Updated bathrooms, outdated room furnishings
The 155 rooms are clean but dated and drab, although bathrooms have been updated, and have granite vanities and shower/tub combos with toiletries. All rooms come with large work stations and free Wi-Fi, but furniture shows signs of age and wear -- Keurig coffeemakers are probably the most up-to-date items in the rooms -- the microwaves, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs (with Xbox controllers) are several generations old. The Studio Suite, with its kitchenette with stainless-steel sink, isn't much bigger than the Double Queen Room, and there's no separation between the living and sleeping areas.
Features
Free access to nearby gym and booking discounts for medical patients and their families
The Inn at Longwood Medical gives discounts to hospital patients and their families (documentation required). There's an on-site laundry, and a CVS pharmacy is attached to the property. The Galleria shopping center is connected to the hotel via the food court, which offers a range of shopping and dining options. The on-site restaurant, Longwood, specializes in beer and American cuisine; room service is also available, but it has limited hours. The hotel has meeting and event space that can accommodate up to 400 people, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. While there's no on-site fitness center, guests receive free day-passes to BodyScapes Fitness nearby.
