Surrounded by three parks, the New England Aquarium, and facing
the harbor, the Boston Marriott Long Wharf owns a picturesque residence along
the Long Wharf Pier on Boston Harbor. The idyllic waterfront address (near the
airport, tourist sites, and downtown Boston) means this three-and-a-half-pearl
property can afford to be expensive. Luckily the price tag translates to value
that remains consistent even at 397 rooms: a clean, contemporary design, modern
amenities, and spacious rooms with all the fixings. For those on a budget, it
might be worth comparing rates with the nearby Hilton Boston Downtown -- a
significantly cheaper stay that’s just as close to downtown.
Scene
Clean, futuristic design; ideal location near aquarium and airport attracts both business travelers and families
The three-and-a-half-pearl Boston Marriott Long Wharf cleverly
reimagines the repetitive design elements that are common to chain hotels like
it. In its clean, futuristic design, a series of perfectly symmetrical geometric
cut-outs frame hallways that seem to stretch endlessly on. The hallways all
border the middle area of the hotel, which houses nothing but a stunning lightinstallation. The open, airy layout, soft lighting, and simple cream color
create an effect that is pleasing to the eye, somehow soothing despite the
massive size of the hotel. The hotel’s proximity to tourist sites, the Rose KennedyGreenway, and the New England Aquarium means this is a big favorite among families
with small children, though the ideal location near the airport attracts
business travelers as well.
Location
Surrounded by three parks and facing the harbor, next to the New England Aquarium
For both tourists and business travelers, The Marriott Long
Wharf couldn’t be in a better location: it’s next to the New England Aquarium
(both the site and the Blue line stop), within 10 minutes of Quincy Market and
Faneuil Hall, and about 15 minutes walking to South Street station and the Red
Line. For business travelers, the proximity to the airport (via a 15-minute
water taxi), the financial district, and I-93 highway is an extra perk. The hotel is surrounded on one side by the harbor, and green
spaces circle the other three -- the Rose Kennedy Greenway, Christopher Columbus
Park, and the Wharf District Park. They are all packed on a sunny day,
especially waterfront bars and restaurants like Tia’s, a popular favorite right
next to the hotel. Otherwise there are other seafood restaurants within a
five-minute walk, or the North End is 10 minutes away on foot and a safe bet
for Italian fare.
Rooms
Rooms are tidy and have modern amenities; soot on the windows distracts from the pretty views
The rooms are fitting for a hotel of this rating -- they are tidy
and have modern amenities, like iPod docks, 37-inch flat screen TVs, and mini-fridges.
The design follows the overall minimalist theme, with mostly cream tones
interrupted by hints of red. Round silver mirrors and mildly surrealist black
and white photography decorate the walls. Beds are made up with plush sleeping pillows and a decorative bolster. A red armchair and matching ottoman provides a spot to watch TV or relax. The bathrooms are small and clean, with generously stocked
towels. Bath and Body Works toiletries are provided. Most rooms have interesting street or harbor views, though the grime
and soot on the windows distracts from the pretty sights.
Features
Modern fitness and business centers, small indoor pool and hot tub with lovely outdoor patio, on-site Waterline Restaurant
The Marriott’s indoor pool is small and bean-shaped, mostly
shallow and perfect for kids, who likely dominate the space during peak hours.
There’s also a hot tub in the corner, that’s old and made of plastic but
functions just fine. The outdoor patio surrounding the pool on all sides and
overlooking the harbor is clearly the highlight of the space -- lounge chairs and
stunning views abound. The fitness center is surrounded by glass walls on all sides
and features up-to-date equipment, including free weights and a number of
cardio machines. No water fountains or yoga mats to be found, but free earplugs and fresh fruit are a nice touch. Wi-Fi comes at a fee here. The business center allows
free printing and there are a number of computers for guest use. 17 different
event spaces are also available for meetings or other needs. Breakfast is pricey and served buffet-style with ample
choices. On-site Waterline Bar and Restaurant
is quite popular -- known for its locally-sourced dishes, like the cannolis made
special from Mike’s Pastry, a famed Italian bakery just around the corner.
