Hotel Greif
Piazza Walther Platz, Entrance Via Della Rena Raingasse

Hotel Greif is an upscale design-focused boutique housed in an ancient inn that dates back to medieval times. Extensive renovations brought the hotel firmly into the 21st century while maintaining much of the building's original period charm. Each of its 33 guest rooms and suites was styled by an individual artist, mostly with artwork ranging from sketches to sculptures. A superb setting overlooking the city's main square is also a highlight, as is their excellent breakfast service. Facilities are generally limited, and you'll have to pop over to the sister hotel for a swim. Overall, however, its an impressive and genuinely unique property with a winning location. The nearby Stadt Hotel Citta is equally well-positioned with an on-site wellness center.

Scala Stiegl Hotel
Via Brennero 11

Scala Stiegl Hotel is a well-kept mid-range property located on the outskirts of Bolzano’s town center. The hotel’s 65 rooms are unfussy and modern, with many offering pretty views of the surrounding streets and nearby mountains. However, their decor is far from luxurious. The property’s extensive gardens are a highlight, with shady lounge areas, an outdoor pool, and a wide restaurant terrace all offering opportunities to admire the neatly trimmed greenery. Some guests may find the common areas slightly dated, while others may enjoy the hotel’s old-school European style. Those looking for more sophisticated accommodations might prefer Hotel Greif, which features guest rooms decorated with original artwork and antiques.

Four Points by Sheraton Bolzano
Via Bruno Buozzi 35, Bolzano-Bozen

The four-pearl Four Points by Sheraton Bolzano is a bright and modern hotel on the outskirts of town, right in the middle of the South Tyrolean Dolomites. While the hotel is a 10-minute drive to the attractive center of Bolzano, it is barely a minute’s walk from Bolzano Fair, making it ideal for business travelers. Features include an expansive spa, well-equipped gym, and sizable indoor pool, most with views of the mountains. A Mediterranean eatery, casual bistro, and hip bar are also on-site. The 189 rooms are decorated to a high standard, albeit a bit generically, and some overlook a dingy interior courtyard. Guests looking for a hotel in the center of town might want to check out the Parkhotel Laurin, which lacks a spa but provides a free buffet breakfast.

Stadt Hotel Città
Walther Square 21

The three-pearl Stadt Hotel Citta has tons of character and charm, and a superb location right on Walther Square. Its 99 guest rooms have bright, contemporary decor, and all come with flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, free Wi-Fi, and many offer lovely views of the streets and distant mountains. The highlight here is the wellness center (closed in summer), with a sauna, steam room, hot tub, and a hydrotherapy pool. The hotel also offers a free hot breakfast, and has a cafe and bar, and a sweet shop with treats from the Viennese Sacher Confiserie. Guests looking for a step up can check out the nearby Parkhotel Laurin, which has an art collection and a better restaurant.

Parkhotel Laurin
Via Laurin 4

Staying at the three-and-a-half-pearl Parkhotel Laurin can be like taking a trip back in time as the property still belongs to the family that built it in 1910 as a holiday location for Austrian and German imperial families. Touches like benches in the elevators, a gorgeous expanse of gardens, and the hotel's impressive collection of 20th-century original art help transport the property to the era of European grandeur. Locals frequent the bar, and the hotel restaurant is also very good, with an interesting menu featuring a fusion of regional cuisine. However, the 100 rooms don't live up to the rest of the property's elegance; although comfortable and spacious with gorgeous marble bathrooms, they're dated and uninspired. For more modern digs and a spa, consider the Four Points by Sheraton Bolzano.
