Bottom Line

The Cliffs Hotel is a 163-room, lower-middle-range hotel set in a grand, though somewhat faded, 1920s landmark overlooking Blackpool's beach. Some nice Art Deco touches and a 2013 renovation of its restaurant aside, much of the property feels like it's seen better days. Rooms are fine (and colorful, thanks to pink bed skirts and striped wallpaper) and many offer sea views, though some are cramped and musty. Spa facilities are good, and there's also enough to keep the kids entertained. All in all, guests get a lot for their money, though some of it will be a bit rough round the edges.

Scene

1920s landmark hotel with Art Deco touches and faded-glamour feel

Built in 1921, The Cliffs Hotel is a local landmark housed in a grand old seaside property with a red brick and yellow terra-cotta facade in a neo-Baroque style. Visitors enter under a domed portico into a simple, rather dated lobby area with curved, Art Deco-influenced reception and concierge desks. Evidence of its '20s origins can also be seen in elegant Art Deco-style staircase leading up to a pretty flower-motif stained glass skylight. Despite these early period touches and being largely well-maintained, the general ambience reflects the faded glamour of its Blackpool surroundings. This doesn't seem to bother the mix of older couples who tend to stay during the week, English families looking for a cheap break, and bachelor/stag parties during the weekends.

Location

Seafront location in Blackpool's North Shore area, three miles from the Pleasure Beach

Cliffs Hotel is set overlooking a long stretch of sandy beach and the Irish Sea in Blackpool -- one of England's best-known seaside resort towns. The hotel is located in the city's North Shore area on Queen's Promenade, which is largely residential and a few miles north of the Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Trams, however, run along the coast just outside the hotel and the iconic Blackpool Tower is a bracing mile-and-a-half stroll away.

Rooms

Simple, colorful seaside-themed rooms, many with sea views

The hotel's 163 rooms are decorated in a bright, colorful style with a subtle English seaside theme -- striped pink and white wallpaper with matching curtains and beach-scene art prints. Furnishings are charmingly simple, and sea-view rooms include 32-inch flat-screen TVs, while non-view rooms have smaller sets. While many bathrooms are clean and modern, some are dated, cramped, and musty-smelling. Many rooms are also on the small side, and noise from the hotel's entertainment does reach some.

Features

Spa and health center, kids' club, and renovated buffet restaurant

The Cliffs Hotel Leisure Club & Spa has the usual mix of amenities: heated indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, and range of relaxation and beauty treatments. There's also an impressively modern gym (the hotel claims as one of the best in Blackpool). Children are also well catered for with a kids' club, and games rooms with video games and pool table. The hotel's restaurant stands out, following an extensive 2013 renovation, as a relatively stylish eatery serving full buffet-style dining and a children's menu. An "Adult Entertainment" room hosts bingo nights, karaoke, and other nightly entertainment and events.
