Scene
One of five hotels in the Nirwana Gardens complex
The aptly named Mayang Sari Beach Resort -- "mayang" means palm blossom and "sari" means flower essence in Indonesian -- is a beachside property that's part of the Nirwana Gardens complex, which comprises five total hotels. This hotel has a bit of a rustic vibe, exemplified by the its wooden chalets, though interior updates have rooms feeling contemporary and attractive. Unfortunately, the the lobby and on-site Spice Restaurant are more traditional and could use a refresh. Some past guests have complained of minor maintenance issues and evident wear. While the resort’s facilities are a bit limited, visitors can access all features at the other Nirwana Gardens hotels. Due to its tranquil setting, the resort is a favorite with couples, many enjoying a weekend away from Singapore, although families can also be seen on the palm-fringed beach.
Location
Expansive beachside grounds on Bintan Island
Set in Lagoi on the northern coast of Bintan Island, Mayang Sari Beach Resort is a 15-minute drive from the Bintan Island Elephant Park and a 10-minute drive from the Laguna Bintan Golf Club. Aside from restaurants and bars at Nirwana Gardens, there are limited options for dining and shopping. Meanwhile, Bintan is a 55-minute catamaran ride from Singapore’s Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, and the resort provides free transfers once guests reach the island (around a 20-minute drive away). Alternatively, travelers can fly into Tanjung Pinang, which is about 90 minutes by car from the resort.
Rooms
Simple but contemporary units with furnished terraces
The resort features thatched-roof chalets with furnished sea- or garden-view terraces -- some steps away from the beach. Albeit simple, contemporary rooms exude rustic charm with earthy colors, dark wooden floors and feature walls, and elaborate headboards with intricate carvings, plus floral throw pillows and bed runners. Amenities consist of air-conditioning, ceiling fans, safes, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and free basic internet (high-speed internet is available at additional fee). Straightforward, neutral-tone bathrooms come with showers, toiletries, slippers, and hairdryers. Some past guests have complained that the air conditioners are insufficient.

The adjacent Mayang Sari Beach Hut is a thatched-roofed beach bar, which serves drinks and snacks from early around noon until late evening. While the palm-fringed beach is stunning and the shallow water is usually crystal clear, tar (black oil) on the sand and in the water can be a problem from time to time. Jellyfish can also be an issue. Guests should also note that the nearest swimming pool is at another Nirwana Gardens resort around a 10-minute walk (or short shuttle ride away).
