The TRYP Wyndham Berlin City East offers rock-bottom prices in exchange for an out-of-the-way location in East Berlin. The 241-room budget hotel is a nondescript concrete block with clean, generic rooms with tube TVs. Function over design is the philosophy here, resulting in a generic lobby and rooms that are adequate and comfortable. Perks include a small sauna -- almost unheard of in a value property -- a summer garden, and an on-site bar and restaurant. But the location is far from central Berlin, and more than one transfer is needed to get there on the city's excellent public transit system. For the same price, the nearby IBIS Budget Berlin Alexanderplatz is more central, closer to public transit, and has a cool contemporary vibe and free Wi-Fi.
Scene
Pleasant public spaces with disjointed decor
From the outside, the TRYP Wyndham Berlin City East is an uninteresting concrete block in a nondescript but reasonably leafy commercial area. Just inside the door are a Mövenpick ice cream case with cold treats and the black faux-brick reception desk. The lobby is pleasant and contemporary, with wide-plank wood floors, dark gray walls, and light gray furniture. Instead of the usual fresh flowers, the lobby has some odd decorative flourishes: a wooden cart with a striped awning, a wooden wheelbarrow stacked with baskets and fake flowers. Seating arrangements range from smart leather couches to wicker chairs that seem out of place amid the dark decor. On the whole, guests tend to be couples on vacation, but groups of friends come here as well along with the occasional business traveler.
Location
In an unremarkable location in East Berlin, far from most attractions
The TRYP by Wyndham Berlin City East is located in a nondescript area of East Berlin, but it's clean and safe with S-Bahn and U-Bahn stops within driving (or busing) distance of the hotel. Central Berlin is a 25- to 30-minute subway ride away, so having a car really helps, but trains in Berlin run 24 hours. There are a few restaurants nearby and two grocery stores across the street. - Three-minute walk to bus stop
Rooms
Simple but adequate rooms with dorm-like furnishings, outdated technology, and few amenities
The rooms at the TRYP by Wyndham Berlin City East are uniform and tidy, with simple dorm-like furnishings, bright-blue low-pile carpet, and dated technology. The only difference between Standard and Superior Doubles is the size: 235 and 248 square feet, respectively; Triples are also available. Doubles consist of two single beds pushed together (common in Europe), and linens are crisp white. Each room has a cherry-veneer armoire, writing desk, nightstands, and a headboard, with two padded chairs per room; Superior Rooms also have an occasional table. Technology consists of a digital radio and small tube TV; Wi-Fi is available for a fee. The lack of amenities makes this feel like the budget hotel it is: Rooms lack a minibar or mini-fridge, coffee-maker, and safe. Bathrooms are small, white-tile affairs with chrome fixtures and stall showers. They’re equipped with hairdryers, soap dispensers, and thin, small towels.
Features
Surprising sauna, restaurant and bar on-site, good breakfast, five meeting rooms, and free parking
As a budget hotel, the TRYP by Wyndham Berlin City East has few amenities and services to speak of. The surprise exception is the sauna, which may be small but is free for guest use. The hotel restaurant serves dinner only: German food, pasta, and burgers. The attractive bar also serves light meals, and in summer guests can dine on the patio. The good and reasonably priced buffet breakfast is served in the bright and contemporary (if generic) breakfast room. It includes scrambled and boiled eggs, potato patties, cold meats, cheeses, bread, rolls, fresh fruit, yogurt, and muesli. Five conference rooms are available and accommodate 300 people. Pets are allowed, parking is free, and Wi-Fi is free in the public spaces, but in-room Wi-Fi has a fee.
