Scene
Victorian building with cozy, welcoming feel
Housed in a pristine-looking Victorian building, the Grand Hostel Berlin offers more than you might expect from a hostel. The lobby is cozy and well-kept, with high ceilings, intricate moldings, and wood floors. The front desk is covered with awards the hostel has won over the years, and there are some lockers, a stand of leaflets about the city, and a couple of potted plants. Just off the lobby, the bar and library is a relaxed place where guests can hang out and socialize. It's a friendly, welcoming sort of place, geared towards youngish tourists who are looking for value with a few homey comforts.
Location
In trendy Kreuzberg, opposite a leafy canal, near bars and restaurants
The Grand Hostel Berlin is located in Kreuzberg, one of Berlin's trendiest neighborhoods, on the south side of the river. It's littered with bars and restaurants, and has a bohemian feel, with a wide variety of cultures and influences. The hostel itself is on a wide, quiet street with a tree-lined canal opposite and plenty of cafes nearby. There are two underground stations just across the street, with another two a short walk away, so the hostel is a great base from which to explore the city.
Rooms
Clean and neutral, with free Wi-Fi
Rooms at the Grand Hostel Berlin range from double rooms with private bathrooms to dormitory rooms for six or seven people with shared bathrooms. The decor is neutral and fairly basic, with patterned carpets and two-tone walls. There's free Wi-Fi in all the rooms. As you might expect, the private rooms feel a little more upmarket than the dorms, but the dorms are clean and tidy, and have single beds rather than bunk beds. The hostel has four floors and no elevator, so those with heavy luggage or mobility issues should request a lower room.
Features
Stylish library bar, German restaurant, laundry facilities, bike rental
Off the lobby, there's a cute bar that doubles as a library, with comfortable seating and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves along one wall. The bar regularly has DJ nights, beer tastings, live music, and game nights, making it a popular hang-out for guests. Grand Ma restaurant serves breakfast (for a fee) and lunch, and the cuisine is German. There's a terrace for outside dining if the weather's good enough. Other amenities include bike hire (for a fee), a snack bar, free Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, and free parking nearby.
