The 238-room Generator Hostel Berlin Prenzlauer Berg is a vibrant chain hostel popular with a younger crowd. Backpackers and other groups of young travelers are attracted by bargain prices, a bar with happy hour specials and dancing, and a beer garden where guests can barbecue. The hostel has both private and shared rooms that are clean but small and don’t have Wi-Fi. There is a restaurant on-site that serves a limited breakfast and dinner for a fee. There's another Generator hostel in Berlin, Generator Berlin Mitte, which is closer to the city center and feels a touch more modern.
Scene
Lively hostel with bright decor, popular with young travelers
The Generator Hostel
Berlin Prenzlauer Berg has eight floors of rooms and a big parking lot that can
accommodate the buses that groups of young travelers sometimes arrive in. The lobby has
playful decor including polka dot benches and a pop art mural, and room doors
are painted bright blue. Far from quiet, the hostel has an outdoor beer garden
open in the summer for guests to barbecue some food and mingle. Inside, there’s
a restaurant with a cafeteria-style line and metal tables and chairs. There’s also a circular bar with panoramic windows where guests can enjoy happy hour or
dancing into the night. The atmosphere is young and relaxed, but can be noisy.
Location
Near subway station and 30 minutes to Alexanderplatz or Berlin Wall Memorial
This hostel is located in the Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood, outside of the center of Berlin and away from the city's most popular sights. There are restaurants near the hostel as well as a supermarket. It’s near the S-Bahn and
within a 30-minute ride on public transportation to the Berlin Wall Memorial or
Alexanderplatz, a public square rich in history with upscale shopping and a
transportation hub. Berlin Tegel Airport can be reached in less than 30 minutes
by car or under an hour on public transportation.
Rooms
Small and clean shared or private rooms with tiny bathrooms
Private rooms are small
and bright with wooden floors, and neon green and bright blue walls. Shared
rooms also have bright walls and feature metal bunk beds with baskets for
storage underneath. The en-suite bathrooms are very tight on space with
compact showers and little blue sinks. Female and male common bathrooms offer rows
of sinks and shower cubicles. Female deluxe rooms are available with hairdryers, dressing tables, and bathroom amenity kits. There’s no Wi-Fi in the
rooms, and some of the young guests create noise well into the night. Also, rooms only have EU
adapters.
