The 139-room Generator Berlin Mitte is
a sleek chain hostel with an artsy-industrial vibe. It’s popular with the 20- and
30-something set and offers a lively bar with a dance floor. The cafe on-site serves
locally inspired food, but there’s a fee for breakfast. Rooms can be tight on
space (as expected in a hostel) and hot in the summer, but guests appreciate
the friendly staff, attention to style, private room option, and hot showers. There's another Generator hostel in Berlin, Generator Hostel Berlin Prenzlauer Berg, which is farther from the city center, but offers an outdoor barbecue area in the summer and free parking.
Scene
Stylish hostel with exposed pipes and street-art inspired murals
Colorful bistro tables and a chalkboard
sign mark the entrance of the Generator Berlin Mitte. Inside, whimsical murals
of faces line the hallways and leather couches provide a spot for young
travelers to relax and read or watch the TV mounted on the wall. An outdoor
garden features a large sculpture and seating areas for guests to mingle in
during warm weather. The restaurant has an industrial-chic look with lighting made from
repurposed fire extinguishers and long wooden picnic-style tables. Bar
Generator features black walls and creative lighting made of barrels of tube
light bulbs. DJs and party lights create a fun atmosphere where guests can
dance into the night. As might be expected, the atmosphere is laid-back but can be noisy with boisterous groups.
Location
Convenient location near restaurants, transportation, and nightlife
Generator Berlin Mitte is
within walking distance to several restaurants, bars, and cafes. It’s a
five-minute walk to the U subway line, and Berlin Tegel Airport can be reached
in less than 40 minutes on public transportation. It’s a 10-minute walk to
Hackesche Höfe, an area popular for its nightclubs. Alexanderplatz, a public
square rich in history with upscale shopping and a transportation hub, is within
a 20-minute walk, and the Berlin Wall Memorial is a 15-minute walk away.
Rooms
Modern single rooms with private bathrooms and shared rooms with bunk beds
Generator Berlin Mitte
offers a variety of rooms including single rooms with private bathrooms, female
rooms equipped with hairdryers, and shared rooms with up to eight beds. Rooms
are modern with simple but eye-catching decor like bold paint and walls covered
with knotty wood. Bathrooms (en suite and shared) are modern with green and
gray tiles, and guests comment favorably on the hot showers. Deluxe rooms come with toiletries
in chic packaging, while shared rooms have sleek, white bunk beds with storage
trunks underneath. Some shared rooms are cramped, and not
being able to open windows can mean rooms can get hot. Also, rooms only have EU adapters. Wi-Fi throughout is free.
Features
Lively bar and cafe serving breakfast for a fee and locally inspired cuisine
The hotel’s modern restaurant serves
locally inspired food and breakfast for a fee, but some guests find the breakfast
offering to lack variety. The inviting, relaxed space is full of picnic-style tables that are convenient for groups. There is a bar on-site that hosts DJs and has a
lively dance floor. The hotel has an Internet corner with one computer as well
as laundry facilities and bike rentals for a fee. Event spaces are available
including a rooftop and basement. Luggage storage is available (for a fee). The hostel has free Wi-Fi.
