Bottom Line

In a prime western Berlin location, the 194-room BEST WESTERN PLUS Amedia Berlin Kurfüerstendamm is an upper-mid-range property that is central for travelers looking to hit the upscale shopping and tourist attractions on Kurfürstendamm avenue. A stylish steakhouse, bright breakfast room, and lobby bar are all available on-site; while these are attractive in appearance, there are many other options for restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. The rooms are modern with electric kettles and are affordable for the area, but service isn't always up to the standards of an advertised four-star hotel. For a more sophisticated atmosphere, the H10 Berlin Ku'damm is on a quiet side street, while nearby Hotel Q! is a better option for taking in the neighborhood's nightlife. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Scene

Modern chain hotel with dramatic lighting and some quirky design

Opened in 2013, this Best Western is a modern, upper-mid-range hotel with a few design quirks working against it. Purple light bathes the entryway and small reception area, but the lobby is up one floor -- accessed either by an elevator down the hall or by the escalator that cuts at an angle across the room. It's a two-way escalator, meaning guests have to wait for others to get off before riding it in the opposite direction. Upstairs, the lobby bar and front desk are combined in one space, bathed in red light, that can get hectic with some guests there to drink and others to check out. Overall the atmosphere is clean and modern, though service isn't exactly up to par for an advertised four-star property.

Location

Kurfürstendamm avenue in the Charlottenburg district

The BEST WESTERN PLUS Amedia Berlin is central for travelers planning a shopping spree on Kurfürstendamm avenue (known locally as Ku'damm) in western Berlin. There's easy access to public transportation lines, including the U-Bahn at Uhlandstrasse and the S-Bahn at Savignyplatz, both within short walking distance for easy access to the rest of the city. Popular eateries and a thriving bar scene keep the area lively at night (restaurants and bars stay open late too). Berlin Tegel Airport is a 15-minute drive north and Berlin Schönefeld Airport is about 25 minutes southeast.

Rooms

Modern rooms with extensive wall murals and electric kettles, but basic amenities

Red and brown decor dominates all 194 rooms, each with a different large scale photographic wall mural above the bed featuring famous locations from around the world. A landscape of Niagara Falls appears in one room, while the Westminster Bridge over the Thames covers the wall of another. Most are on the small side with work desks incorporated into open shelving. Not uncommonly, twin beds are pushed together for doubles. Other furnishings consist of red pleather chairs and cube stools, with bedside tables that hold electric kettles. There are no coffeemakers or minibars in standard Business Rooms, though there are coffeemakers in Junior Suites. The tiled, contemporary bathrooms have walk-in showers (larger ones in Junior Suites). Cribs are available, and Junior suites have sofa beds meant to accommodate a single child. Families of four can book Family Rooms, made up of two connecting Superior Rooms. Wi-Fi is free.

Features

Spanish steakhouse, lobby bar, business corner, and free Wi-Fi

The hotel's main restaurant, El Dorado, is a stylish Spanish steakhouse and tapas bar open for lunch and dinner with a pleasant outdoor patio. It specializes in traditional tapas, but may be more notable for its Black Angus steaks from Aberdeen, Scotland, and its decent wine list. A second bar integrated with the lobby has views over Kurfürstendamm. There's also a dedicated breakfast restaurant (not included) that serves a typical breakfast buffet of cold meats and cheeses, cereal, fresh fruit, rolls, and eggs in a bright space. A 24-hour business corner has a single computer with an attached printer and free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
