Bottom Line

The upscale, 145-room Adina Apartment Hotel Berlin Hackescher Markt is conveniently located in East Berlin in easy walking distance to a plethora of shops, restaurants, nightlife, public transportation, and sights, such as Museum Island. With artsy, modern style, the hotel features an eclectic collection of furniture and bright accents that come off tasteful against moodier, dark backdrops. Lots of public seating areas and a well-reviewed on-site restaurant and bar give guests spaces to relax. The studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom apartment-style rooms are spacious, stylish, and packed with amenities, including a fully equipped kitchenette. There’s also a small on-site sauna, two whirlpools that sit under a cool starry ceiling, and a functional fitness area. Guests biggest complaint? Wi-Fi costs extra and the connection is poor. As an alternative, travelers could consider the 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin, another design-conscious upscale hotel but one with free Wi-Fi.

Scene

Artsy, modern decor with bright accents and eclectic furniture

The Adina Apartment Hotel combines dark backdrops with colorful accents to create an eclectic, modern vibe that reflects Berlin’s status as a contemporary art scene. The hotel is situated in a large square building with a concrete and white facade punctuated by pink planters. In the lobby, gray tiled floors and black walls are brightened up with post-modern purple couches and fun accent pillows. Indeed, the chairs throughout are one of the decorative highlights of the hotel, and they come in a wide variety of bold colors and mod shapes. And the sleek black reception desk is illuminated by staggered, ball-shaped orange pendant lights. As part of an Australian-owned company, this property has a subtle Aussie-theme with Australian food in the on-site restaurant and photos in the rooms. In the common areas, though, contemporary geo-tribal modern art graces the walls instead. Because it’s in easy walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and sights and features large, apartment-style rooms, it’s a hotel frequented by vacationing couples and families, but its proximity to the train makes it useful for business guests, too.

Museum Island is only an 11-minute walk from the hotel, while 25-minutes on foot will take guests to Brandenburg Gate and the western edge of the Tiergarten. A 24-hour grocery store across the street is perfect for guests who want to make use of their hotel apartments’ kitchenettes.- One-minute walk to Berlin Hackescher Markt transportation hub (buses, trams, and trains)

Rooms

Spacious, stylish apartment-style rooms with kitchenettes and a plethora of amenities -- but Wi-Fi costs extra

The Adina Hotel features tasteful, spacious, and amenity-packed apartment rooms available as studios, one bedrooms, or two bedrooms. Decor is more subdued than in the common areas, with gray carpet, a dark gray accent wall, and black and white furnishings. But the contemporary, eclectic vibe is still apparent in the Eames molded chairs, Danish loungers, and floor lamps shaped like giant swing-arm desk lamps. Framed photos of Australian sights adorn the walls, a nod to the hotel's Australian company. All rooms include air-conditioning, safes, tables and seating areas, work desks, irons and ironing boards, iPod docking stations, and flat-screen TVs. Some rooms also have balconies, while others include washing machines or Nespresso coffeemakers. But in-room Wi-Fi costs an extra fee after the first hour, and guests report it's slow. Every room also includes a fully equipped kitchenette with a medium-sized fridge, microwave, two-burner ceramic stovetop, sink, toaster, electric kettle, and dishwasher. Kitchens are also equipped with plenty of dishes, glasses, cookware, mugs, and utensils. Rooms are stocked with a small number of snacks and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, which cost an extra fee. But there’s a 24-hour grocery store across the street from the hotel.
Bathrooms are fully tiled and include a spacious wet-room style shower or a bathtub, square sinks, hairdryers, individual Naturals toiletries, and an in-shower body wash dispenser. Despite being right next to a train station, the rooms are surprisingly quiet. Street-facing views higher up may offer views of the area as well as the Berlin TV Tower.

Features

Chic, popular on-site restaurant and bar, fitness area, and other amenities

The Adina offers a range of on-site features. The street-facing Alto Restaurant and Bar serves drinks and Australian and German food. The breakfast buffet is served here, and while it’s not cheap, guests find it has an extensive and satisfying selection. The ambiance is chic and modern with dark, moody decor that mirrors the lobby. Guests can sit at tables, the bar, or cushioned armchairs gathered in groups or facing the tall front windows. The hotel’s gym is less attractive, with windowless white walls and bright green carpeting. Still, it’s functional and clean with cardio equipment (including two treadmills), weight lifting machines, gym balls, benches, and free weights. And it includes  a sauna, green-tiled shower stalls, and a few areas to sit or lounge. The sauna and whirlpool area are more stylish. The whirlpools sit in a darkened room with a lit ceiling that looks like a starry sky. The hotel also has an attractive outdoor courtyard and plenty of indoor seating, a Mac computer for guests' use, a grocery delivery service, on-site garage parking (for an extra fee), and on-site bike rentals.
