Bottom Line

The 88-room, mid-range Mercure Bergamo Palazzo Dolci has an excellent location within walking distance to attractions and public transport. However, its lack of on-site features makes it most ideal for tourists looking to spend their time exploring the nearby bars, restaurants, and attractions, or for business travelers who don't need much more than an evening bar, clothes-based services, or a quick room service meal. The lack of public spaces make this a private hotel with not much mingling, even in the tiny bar. Despite some mixed reviews, several guests are returnees, most oh which book the Privilege-level rooms that come with free minibar drinks and bathrobes, in addition to the flat-screen TVs, free (if unreliable) Wi-Fi, and AC. It's worth considering the slightly pricier Arli Hotel, which has a spa and fitness center.

Scene

Clean and contemporary hotel with few features

There's not much of a scene here due to the hotel's lack of public spaces. Even the evening cocktail bar, which has metal tables, is a bit too small for mingling. Simply said, little socializing goes on -- a plus for couples looking for privacy and quiet-minded business travelers. The Mercure Bergamo Palazzo Dolci is an affordable spot in the city center, making it an attractive option for anyone looking for a contemporary and convenient place to lay their head between outings in the area. Public spaces are all full of light, and feature fresh furniture, smooth lines and surfaces, and white walls.

Location

Excellent central location across from the convention center

Located across the street from the Papa Giovanni Convention Center, it's easy to see why the Mercure Bergamo is popular among business travelers. Thanks to its location within a few minutes' walk from the train station and 1 and 2 buses, it's also a favorite with tourists. The 1 bus provides direct transport to the Orio al Serio International Airport, for a total travel time of about 20 minutes. There are several upscale stores within a 10-minute walk, as well as numerous places to grab a bite to eat. - Five-minute walk to the Donizetti Theater

  • Five-minute walk to the Bergamo train station
  • Six-minute walk to Il Sentierone
  • Six-minute walk to Torre dei Caduti
  • 10-minute drive to Orio al Serio International Airport
  • 20-minute metro ride to the medieval village of Bergamo Alta
  • 36-minute drive to Linate Airport
  • 40-minute train to Lake Como
  • 45-minute train to Milan
  • 60-minute drive from Malpensa Airport

Rooms

Contemporary rooms that come standard with AC, Wi-Fi, and minibars

Mercure's 88 rooms are contemporary, utilizing vibrant colors, crisp white linen, and somewhat stylish furniture. Rooms can have a tendency to be dark since there are no direct overhead lights, only decor lamps and accent lighting. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos, hairdryers, toiletries, and bidets, and feel a bit dated because of small square-tiled walls and floors, the latter of which could use a grout scrub. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, minibars, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and unreliable AC. Rooms are priced on single or double occupancy, so travelers should check the rate beforehand to avoid surprises. Privilege Rooms snag you a few more extras like free soda and water, a Nespresso machine, and bathrobes.

Features

Slim features include a small bar, breakfast area, and free Wi-Fi

Mercure Bergamo Palazzo Dolci has few on-site features, notably lacking a gym and spa facilities. There is a tiny cocktail bar, Bar L'Accademia, offering cocktails with local flavors and decent local brews. There's no full restaurant, but guests can opt-in for the well-reviewed breakfast buffet or order room service from morning until late at night. Beyond this, it's just the small stuff like an internet station with a computer and printer, ironing station, and for-fee extras like dry cleaning and offsite parking. These minimal features are best suited for business travelers or tourists who are content to try the variety of restaurants, bars, and activities surrounding the hotel. The free Wi-Fi is available throughout, but it reportedly can have a weak signal at times.
