The Super 8 Bend is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel in a central location, within a five-minute drive of the Old Mill District and downtown. The free breakfast buffet features waffles and gets decent reviews from guests, there's an indoor pool and hot tub, and free passes to a nearby public gym are on offer. The 79 guest rooms have a pleasing contemporary look, but many need renovation and better maintenance. All come with flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi, and some feature microwaves and mini-fridges. Suites with sofa beds are available. Travelers who want a location within a short walk of the downtown center might consider the Bend Three Sisters Inn & Suites, but it’s typically a bit more expensive and its pool is only open seasonally.
Scene
Affordable hotel with indoor pool draws leisure travelers, especially families
The Super 8 is a typical chain hotel housed in a modern building, with a porte cochere entrance and set on well-landscaped grounds. The interiors are fairly nondescript, but the breakfast room where guests gather in the morning gets lots of natural light, and features light-wood furniture with cheerful, violet-colored seating. The hotel gets a few business travelers, but it mostly draws vacationing couples and families looking for a stay with affordable rates and value-added extras in exchange for a prime downtown location.
Location
On SE 3rd Street near shopping and dining, a three-minute drive from Old Mill District
The Super 8 is in a busy area on SE 3rd Street/Business U.S.-97 next to a shopping center and supermarket, within a short walk of several restaurants. The Fred Meyer Complex bus stop is a three-minute walk. The Deschutes River and Old Mill District with its shops, galleries, restaurants, and cinema is a little less than a three-minute drive or 20 minutes by bus. Downtown Bend has more shops and restaurants, as well as many coffee shops and bars -- it’s a little more than a five-minute drive or 25 minutes by bus. The Greyhound station is a five-minute drive or 10 minutes by bus. Other area attractions include the High Desert Museum (a 10-minute drive) and Les Schwab Amphitheater concert venue (a five-minute drive or 35-minute bus ride). The trailhead for the Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint is roughly a five-minute drive or 25 minutes by bus, and Mt. Bachelor Ski Area is a 30-minute drive. Redmond Municipal Airport is 20 minutes by car from the Super 8.
Rooms
Spacious with contemporary decor, though many need updating
Guest rooms at the Super 8 have a pleasant contemporary look, with light-wood furniture, distinctive brown-and-green bedspreads with a graphic print, and large black-and-white photos on walls. The hotel has started to renovate units, but many were still dated as of our summer 2017 visit. All 79 rooms come with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs with basic cable, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms also have microwaves and mini-fridges, and suites with living areas and sofa beds are also available. Bathrooms are spacious and come with granite countertops, hairdryers, and shower/tub combos.
Features
Heated indoor pool and hot tub, free breakfast buffet with waffles, laundry room
The Super 8 offers a decent lineup of amenities for a hotel in its category. There's a free breakfast buffet with make-your-own waffles, biscuits and gravy, hard-boiled eggs, and a wide range of cold items, and free coffee is available all day in the lobby. There's no restaurant on-site, but several are within a short walk of the hotel. A small (about 10 meters long) heated swimming pool is another highlight, situated in an indoor space with a hot tub and deck with tables and chairs. While there's no fitness center on-site, the front desk hands out free passes to a nearby public gym. There is no business center or public computer, but a meeting room, coin-op laundry, 24-hour front desk, and free parking (with space for large vehicles) are on-site. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. Pets (dogs only) are permitted for a per-stay, per-pet fee. Rooms are housed on three floors with no elevator, so guests with limited mobility may want to request ground-floor rooms.
